Chapter 10: The Corporate Fallout

While Clara and Martha were beginning their peaceful morning routine in the suburbs, Julian was experiencing the brutal collapse of his professional world across town. Sitting in his parked car outside the glass-paneled corporate office building where he worked as a senior vice president, he stared blankly at his steering wheel. His phone buzzed incessantly with notifications from his colleagues, credit card companies, and the bank rejecting his automated corporate expense drafts.
When Julian finally walked through the revolving glass doors of the lobby, the atmosphere among the staff felt noticeably different. Secretaries avoided his gaze, and the junior analysts who usually greeted him with obsequious deference suddenly found urgent work to do on their computer screens. As he approached his private office, he found the door partially ajar. Sitting at his mahogany desk was corporate human resources director Marcus Vance—no relation, despite the shared name—alongside the company's chief financial officer.
"Julian. Close the door and take a seat," Marcus said coldly, not bothering to look up from the thick manila folder spread across the desk.
Julian’s heart hammered against his ribs as he stepped inside, his knees feeling weak. "Marcus, what’s going on? I have a major client pitch at ten o'clock, I don't have time for a formal meeting right now."
"You don't have clients anymore, Julian," the CFO interrupted, slamming a printed bank audit report onto the desk surface. "The corporate compliance department was alerted this morning regarding irregular wire transfers and suspicious expense reporting tied to your department. Specifically, fifteen thousand dollars in unauthorized operational funds diverted to private accounts last month."
Julian turned pale, grabbing the back of the visitor chair for support. "That... that was an administrative error! It was an internal accounting glitch that I was in the process of resolving!"

"Don't insult our intelligence, Julian," Marcus said, looking up with a piercing glare. "The audit trail is crystal clear. You used your corporate positioning to fund a lifestyle of personal deception, and now the board has voted unanimously to terminate your employment effective immediately. Security is waiting outside to escort you off the premises."
The realization that his professional reputation was shattered beyond repair hit Julian like a physical blow. Without his job, without his corporate status, and without access to Clara’s inheritance or his secret accounts, he was entirely bankrupt in every sense of the word.
