Chapter 7: A Glitch in the Matrix

The flash of her smartphone screen seemed to illuminate the entire sunroom in a sudden, blinding strobe. Eleanor froze, her heart instantly plunging into her stomach. She hadn't turned off the flash.

A sharp, metallic clatter echoed from the doorway.

Eleanor whipped her head around. Standing at the threshold of the sunroom, framed by the bright morning light, was Elena. Her yoga mat was tucked under one arm, her designer gym bag slung over her shoulder, and her face was utterly devoid of the soft, maternal warmth she wore for Richard. The class had clearly been canceled, or perhaps Elena had forgotten something. Whatever the reason, her return was twenty minutes ahead of schedule.

For a terrifying second, neither of them moved. The silence between them was thick, suffocating, and loaded with lethal intent. Elena’s eyes dropped from Eleanor’s face down to the open brass lockbox resting on the stone floor, then to the smartphone clutched in Eleanor’s trembling hand.

The mask of grace melted away entirely, revealing the sharp, predatory edge beneath. Elena didn't scream, nor did she panic. Instead, a slow, chilling smile spread across her lips.

""Well, well,"" Elena said, her voice dropping an octave, losing all trace of its usual melodic warmth. ""It seems the little girl has been playing detective. How utterly predictable.""

Eleanor scrambled backward on her knees, slamming the lid of the lockbox shut, though she kept the small key clutched tightly in her fist. ""You're a fraud,"" Eleanor said, her voice shaking with adrenaline. ""You're trying to ruin my dad, to steal everything he worked for. I have the photos. I have the proof.""

Elena didn't rush forward. She calmly set her yoga mat and gym bag down on a nearby wicker chair, smoothing the front of her designer athletic wear with agonizing slowness. ""Photos of what, Eleanor? A few old bank statements? Some drafts that a disgruntled business associate left behind?"" She took a slow step into the room, closing the distance between them. ""Who do you think Richard will believe? A desperate teenager caught breaking into her stepmother’s private property, or his devoted wife who has spent the last year trying to mend this broken family?""

""He'll see the truth when I show him these,"" Eleanor countered, holding up the phone defiantly, though her knees trembled against the cold stone.

""He won't even look at them,"" Elena whispered, her eyes narrowing into cold slits. ""Because by the time he gets home tonight, those photos will be mysteriously recovered from *your* cloud storage, linked to a malicious attempt to frame me. Richard loves loyalty above all else, Eleanor. Your paranoia is going to cost you everything.""
