Chapter 4: Shadows in the Hallway

The digital clock on Eleanor’s nightstand glowed 2:14 AM in harsh red numbers. Sleep had eluded her, chased away by a cocktail of burning injustice and nervous anticipation. She pulled a dark hoodie over her gray t-shirt, slipping her bare feet into a pair of soft house slippers. The house was dead silent, the kind of heavy, settling quiet that old suburban homes acquire in the dead of night. She eased her bedroom door open, wincing at the microscopic squeak of the brass hinges, and stepped out into the dark hallway.
Her destination wasn't the master bedroom; it was the small, disused study at the end of the second-floor landing. Her father kept his home office files there, locked inside a heavy metal filing cabinet. For weeks, she had suspected that Elena’s sudden arrival in their lives hadn't been the chance meeting at a corporate charity gala that Richard believed it to be. There were too many inconsistencies, too many polished stories that didn't quite align. Her mother had always kept a detailed journal in that very room, tucked away in the bottom shelf of the mahogany bookcase—a journal that had vanished the week Elena moved in.
Navigating by the pale moonlight filtering through the tall arched window on the landing, Eleanor moved with practiced stealth. The floorboards here were old and dry, demanding careful foot placement. As she reached the study door, she noticed a thin sliver of yellow light pooling across the carpet from beneath the door frame. Someone was inside.
Eleanor froze, pressing her back against the cool paneled wall. A low murmur of a voice drifted out, muffled by the solid wood. It wasn't Richard’s deep rumble; it was smooth, measured, and distinctly feminine. Elena was on the phone at two in the morning.
Quietly, Eleanor crept closer, pressing her ear against the cool wood of the door.

""...he's completely convinced,"" Elena’s voice whispered, carrying a sharp, triumphant edge that bore no resemblance to the soft, gentle tones she used around Richard. ""The girl played right into my hands today by tearing that pillow. Richard is ready to send her away to boarding school by the end of the month. Just hold tight; the transfer papers are already drawn up. Once the trust fund assets are reallocated under the new marital clauses, we'll have full control of the estate.""
Eleanor’s breath caught in her throat. The room seemed to tilt violently on its axis. It wasn't about a messy house, or a teenager’s bad attitude, or even a clash of personalities. It was a calculated heist. Elena was systematically dismantling Eleanor’s life to steal her mother’s legacy and her family’s entire financial future.
