Chapter 8 - The Whisper Beneath the Floorboards

The beam of the tactical flashlight sliced through the dusty air of the study, illuminating the overturned desk drawer and the burner phone lying abandoned on the rug. The intruder in tactical gear stood directly over the open floor vent, his heavy combat boot resting on the very edge of the metal lip. Beneath the floorboards, curled tightly into a ball in the damp, claustrophobic darkness of the crawlspace, Leo held his breath. His heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird, each beat sounding to his ears like a bass drum echoing through the hollow earth. He clamped a small hand over his mouth, swallowing the air with agonizing slowness so as not to make a single sound.

Above, the intruder leaned down, his comms unit emitting a faint static hiss. “Target room is clear, but the desk is tossed,” the man reported through his throat mic. “Searching the perimeter.”

Heavy footsteps retreated toward the hallway, the sound fading just enough for Leo to exhale a microscopic sigh of relief. He began to crawl forward on his hands and knees through the low-ceilinged tunnel, dragging his bruised elbows across the rough dirt and wooden joists. The light blue suit jacket he wore caught on a protruding nail, tearing the fabric, but he didn't stop. He pushed deeper into the dark, following the scent of oil and concrete that signaled the approach to the detached garage.

Back in the foyer, Sarah stood her ground against the second intruder, her eyes locked on the tactical visor of the man holding Marcus down.

“You’re wasting your time,” Sarah said, her voice terrifyingly steady despite the adrenaline spiking through her veins. “The files are already distributed across three distinct cloud nodes with dead-man encryption. If either of us stops breathing for more than ten minutes, the entire financial portfolio of your employers goes public to every federal agency in the country.”

The intruder paused, tilting his head as if listening to an internal feed. His gloved hand hovered over his holster, the tension in the hallway snapping like a taut wire. Before he could make a move, the distant wail of police sirens broke through the night air, faint at first, but rapidly growing louder as multiple cruisers tore down the suburban street with their lights flashing a frantic red and blue against the broken front windows.

“Boss, we’re out of time,” the man by the door hissed into his radio. “Local PD is inbound. Dispatch is locked.”

The lead intruder stepped back from the hallway, casting one last murderous glance at Sarah before gesturing sharply to his partner. “Leave the woman and the accountant. Find the kid. He’s the key.”

In the crawlspace, Leo reached the end of the tunnel where a heavy wooden trapdoor led upward into the dark interior of the garage. He pushed up against it with all his remaining strength. The latch clicked open, and cool night air rushed into his lungs as he tumbled out onto the oil-stained concrete floor of the garage, right beside Julian’s parked luxury sports car.
