Chapter 7 - The Breach of Sanctuary

The explosion of splintered wood shook the drywall and sent Marcus screaming into the hallway. Sarah spun around from the peephole just as two massive figures clad in tactical black gear poured into the foyer, their faces obscured by ski masks and dark tactical goggles. They moved with terrifying speed, ignoring the sobbing CFO crumpled on the floor as they swept their weapons toward the interior corridors.
“Sarah! Run!” Marcus shrieked, scrambling backward on his hands and knees before a heavy boot pinned his shoulder to the floor, silencing him with a sharp, breathless gasp.
Sarah didn't run. She planted her feet firmly at the end of the hallway, her slight frame holding an impossible, desperate gravity. She wasn't armed, but her gaze was a wall of pure defiance. “Get out of my house!” she demanded, her voice cutting through the ringing silence left by the shattered door.
The lead intruder didn't speak. He simply raised a gloved hand, signaling his partner to cover the perimeter while he took a slow, calculated step toward Sarah. “The boy,” the intruder said, his voice mechanically altered through a comms unit. “And the drive. Hand them over, and the woman and the accountant walk away breathing.”
Down the hall in the study, Leo froze, the burner phone still pressed tight against his ear. He could hear the heavy thud of tactical boots on the hardwood floors, coming closer with every second. Clara’s voice crackled frantically from the tiny speaker in his hand.
“Leo! Are you moving? Get into the crawlspace right now!” Clara commanded, the sound of typing keys clacking furiously in the background. “I’m routing police dispatch to your address, but they’re four minutes out. You have to buy time!”
Leo dropped the burner phone to the floor, letting it clatter against the rug as he fell to his knees in the corner of the study. He grabbed the heavy brass screwdriver from the desk drawer and jammed it into the first screw of the floor vent. His hands were shaking violently, sweat beading on his forehead above his light blue suit collar. The screw turned, resisting the rusted threads, but under his desperate weight, it finally gave way. He ripped the second screw out with his bare fingers, tossing the metal grate aside.
Darkness yawned beneath the floorboards, smelling of damp earth and old insulation. Leo didn't hesitate. He dropped feet first into the narrow shaft, pulling his small frame downward just as the doorknob to the study began to turn with a slow, agonizing click.

Above him, the heavy oak door of the study swung wide open. The beam of a high-powered tactical flashlight swept across the empty room, cutting through the dust motes dancing in the air. The intruder stepped inside, his heavy boots coming to a halt directly over the open floor vent where Leo had vanished moments before, his boots stopping inches from the dark gap in the floorboards.
