Chapter 8 - Federal Thresholds

The heavy oak door of the penthouse swung completely open as three federal marshals in tactical vests and ballistic helmets rushed into the suite. Their weapons were raised, sweeping the room with disciplined precision before lowering as they identified the security guard on the floor and Elena standing unharmed beside her son.

“Agent Miller, Federal Bureau of Financial Crimes,” the lead marshal announced, flashing his badge sharply before tucking it back into his vest. He looked from Elena to the young boy in the light blue suit standing beside the glowing laptop. “Are you Mrs. Vance?”

“I am,” Elena replied, her voice steady and clear as she adjusted the collar of her white blazer. She held out the heavy leather ledger in both hands. “And this is the original ledger detailing twenty years of corporate fraud, asset misappropriation, and forged signatures committed by Julian Vance.”

Agent Miller took the book with visible reverence, running a gloved hand over the embossed gold monogram. He signaled to a junior agent behind him, who immediately stepped forward with a sterile evidence bag and a digital scanner.

“We’ve been tracking these missing accounts for eighteen months,” Agent Miller said, his gaze shifting down to Leo. He raised an eyebrow in quiet astonishment. “And who is this young man? The intelligence reports mentioned an encrypted firewall backup, but our cyber division said only an authorized terminal could bypass the master kill switch.”

Leo looked up at the federal agent, his expression serious and polite. “My dad taught me his password scheme when I was six,” Leo explained simply. “He used the birthdays of his three favorite racing horses and the street number of his offshore mailbox in the Caymans. It wasn't very secure.”

A faint smile touched the corners of Agent Miller’s mouth, though he quickly suppressed it, maintaining his professional demeanor. “Well, young man, your father’s lack of creativity has just saved the federal government three years of forensic accounting.”

Behind them, the second security guard helped his injured colleague to his feet, handing him a wet cloth to stem the bruise forming along his shoulder.

“Where is Julian Vance now?” Agent Miller asked, turning his attention back to Elena.

“He was last seen in the ballroom downstairs with Clara Sterling,” Elena answered, her tone cold and distant. “Wearing my anniversary dress and believing he was still untouchable.”

“Not anymore,” Agent Miller said, keying his shoulder mic. “All units, this is Lead. Suspect Julian Vance is located on or near the ground floor ballroom of the Grand Meridian. Secure all exits. Do not let him leave the premises under any circumstances.”

Static crackled in response over the radio channel, followed by confirmation from three separate perimeter teams stationed outside the hotel’s revolving glass doors.

Elena looked down at Leo, whose shoulders had relaxed just a fraction of an inch now that the immediate physical danger had passed. She knelt down, her pink-beige dress pooling around her knees on the carpet, and adjusted his blue bow tie with trembling fingers.

“You did well, Leo,” Elena whispered softly, her eyes shining with unshed tears of pride and exhaustion. “We are almost finished.”

Before Leo could answer, the smartphone in his pocket buzzed with a sharp, vibrating chime. He pulled it out and looked at the screen. It wasn't a call; it was a live security camera feed from the hotel lobby downstairs, showing Julian running blindly toward the exit, only to be blocked by two federal agents in dark suits.
