Chapter 6 - The Men on the Stairs

The sound of rushing footsteps on the private interior staircase vibrated through the floorboards of the penthouse suite. The shouting was distinct now—coarse, agitated voices demanding access to the fourteenth floor.

“Stay behind me,” the lead security guard ordered, drawing his hand decisively away from his belt as he unclipped a heavy tactical flashlight and stepped out into the main hallway. The second guard moved to flank the doorway of the master bedroom, positioning himself where he could cover both the corridor and the windows.

Elena stepped back into the bedroom, pulling Leo tightly against her side. She tucked the heavy leather ledger beneath her arm and grabbed Julian’s smartphone off the nightstand, sliding it into the deep pocket of her white blazer.

“Mom, who is down there?” Leo asked, his voice dropping to a whisper, though his breathing remained calm and measured.

“People your father thought he could outsmart,” Elena replied grimly. She looked toward the private balcony that overlooked the glittering canyon of the avenue below. “Leo, take my hand. We are going to the service elevator.”

“Wait,” Leo pointed toward the open laptop on the mahogany desk in the living room. The screen, which had been displaying offshore financial spreadsheets, suddenly flashed a bright, solid crimson. A text box materialized across the center of the display with flashing white letters: SYSTEM OVERRIDE: ENCRYPTION KEY REQUIRED.

“What is that?” one of the guards muttered, stepping toward the desk.

“It’s the dead-man switch,” Elena realized with a sharp intake of breath. “Julian programmed the entire corporate server to wipe itself clean the moment a federal IP address pinged his terminal. If that drive erases, every trace of the family trust disappears with it.”

Before Elena could reach the keyboard, the door to the penthouse suite was kicked inward with a splintering crash. Wood splinters flew across the Persian rug as two large men in dark, ill-fitting winter coats burst into the room. They weren’t hotel security. Their shoulders were broad, their movements practiced and aggressive, and the one leading the charge held a heavy leather briefcase tightly in his left hand while his right hand hovered inside his coat.

“Nobody moves!” the lead intruder barked, his voice echoing off the high ceilings. His eyes darted around the room, landing instantly on Elena, then on the glowing laptop, and finally down at the small eight-year-old boy standing beside her in a light blue suit.

The security guard tried to step between them, shouting, “Stay back! Property management is on the line!” but the second intruder moved with terrifying speed, striking the guard across the shoulder with a heavy steel baton. The guard collapsed against the mahogany table with a muffled groan.

Leo didn't scream. He didn't cry. Instead, his eyes darted to the heavy glass vase sitting on the side table near the window. Without a word to his mother, his small hand slipped out of hers.

“Leo, no,” Elena whispered, grabbing for his shoulder, but the boy was already moving with surprising agility, darting behind the heavy velvet drapes toward the desk where the laptop continued its countdown: 00:45 seconds to permanent deletion.

The intruder in the lead took two heavy strides toward the desk, leveling a cold, predatory stare directly at Elena. “Where is Julian?” the man demanded, his voice thick with menace. “Tell us where he hid the ledger, or the boy gets carried out of here in a box.”

Leo’s hand hit the spacebar on the glowing laptop just as the countdown reached ten seconds, and the screen instantly shifted from crimson to a brilliant, blinding white.
