Chapter 12: The Iron Clad Case

The security gates of the State Department of Justice building in the capital slid open automatically as Mark’s sedan approached, cleared by an advanced press credential code tied to the state gazette. They pulled into the underground parking garage, surrounded by gray concrete pillars and security cameras mounted on every corner.

Assistant Attorney General Rachel Hayes was waiting for them by the elevators, flanked by two armed state troopers in full tactical gear. She was a woman in her late forties with sharp, intelligent eyes, wearing a tailored charcoal suit that commanded immediate respect.

Mark killed the engine and stepped out first, holding up his hands defensively to show he wasn't carrying a weapon, though Hayes’s eyes had already locked onto the teenage boy stepping out of the passenger side holding a weathered canvas bag.

""Mark,"" Hayes said, striding forward with a brisk, purposeful gait. ""You said you had physical evidence regarding the Fairview transit embezzlement case from twelve years ago.""

Leo stepped forward, lifting the canvas bag and placing it directly into the assistant attorney general's hands. Hayes looked down at the bag, then up into Leo's hazel eyes. The resemblance was striking enough that Hayes paused, her professional detachment faltering for a fraction of a second.

""Who is this?"" Hayes asked softly.

""I'm Leo Miller,"" the teenager replied steadily, his voice clear and resonant in the concrete parking garage. ""And those are Arthur Miller's original ledgers. He hid them before he died, and I found them today.""

Hayes unzipped the canvas bag with practiced urgency. She reached inside, pulled out the first black leather ledger, and flipped it open under the overhead fluorescent lights. She scanned the handwritten columns, the transaction routing numbers, and the red-circled signature of Mayor Thomas Vance. Her eyes widened as the sheer magnitude of the evidence laid bare before her eyes.

""My God,"" Hayes whispered, her breath catching. ""This isn't just embezzlement... this is an airtight conspiracy spanning twelve years. Every account number, every shell corporation, every intermediary bank is documented right here.""

""Mayor Vance's men raided David Miller's home in the hills less than two hours ago,"" Mark interjected urgently. ""Detective Miller stayed behind to hold them off. We need a state police tactical team dispatched to that address immediately before they silence him.""

Hayes didn't hesitate for a single second. She snapped the ledger shut, tucked the bag securely under her arm, and turned to the two state troopers standing behind her.

""Get on the secure radio,"" Hayes commanded, her voice ringing with absolute authority. ""Dispatch a priority-one state tactical unit to the Miller residence in the Fairview hills. Coordinate with the state police barracks for an immediate arrest warrant for Mayor Thomas Vance on charges of racketeering, embezzlement, and conspiracy to commit homicide. Move now.""
