Chapter 10: The Ridge Trail

The climb up the steep ridge behind the Miller property was grueling, the damp earth sliding beneath their sneakers with every hurried step. Leo led the way, moving through the pitch-black woods with an uncanny agility born of years spent navigating the industrial rail yards in the dead of night. He held the canvas bag securely against his chest with one arm, using his free hand to steady Sarah as she scrambled up the rocky incline.
Behind them, muffled shouts echoed through the stillness of the mountain forest, followed by the faint beam of tactical flashlights cutting erratic patterns through the canopy of pine branches. They were being hunted by professionals—men trained in tracking and perimeter sweeps.
""Keep going,"" Leo whispered encouragingly, pausing for a second to let Sarah catch her breath as she leaned against the rough trunk of an ancient oak tree.
Sarah pressed a hand to her side, gasping for air in the freezing night aircarrier. ""David..."" she managed to whisper, her voice choked with terror. ""Is he...?""
""He's buying us time,"" Leo said firmly, though his own stomach churned with dread. He knew David was outgunned and outnumbered by whatever hit squad Mayor Vance had sent to silence them. But he also knew that stopping now meant death for all of them. ""Mark is driving up the East Ridge Road right now. If we can reach the old logging road at the top of the ridge, we can flag him down before these guys cut us off.""
They pushed onward, scrambling up the final rocky ridge until they broke out into the open clearing of the old logging road. The cold mountain wind hit them full force, carrying the faint, distant hum of an automobile engine grinding up the steep incline from the valley below.
Leo scanned the winding dirt road through the break in the trees. A pair of headlights rounded the distant bend, moving slowly with their high beams dimmed.
""That's Mark's car,"" Sarah said, pointing a trembling finger at the vehicle.
Leo stepped out into the middle of the logging road, waving his arms to signal the approaching sedan. The car braked sharply, tires skidding on the loose gravel before coming to a halt just feet away from them. The driver’s side door flew open, and a tall man in a dark trench coat stepped out, his face illuminated by the car’s headlights.
""Sarah! Leo!"" Mark called out, hurrying over to them with wide, anxious eyes. ""What happened? I saw a police cruiser parked down at the base of the access road with its doors open and no one inside.""
""Vance's men are at the house,"" Sarah said, her voice shaking uncontrollably as she fell against her brother for support. ""David stayed behind to hold them off.""

Mark's expression hardened into grim determination. He looked at the canvas bag clutched tightly in Leo's hands. ""Did you get the ledgers?""
Leo held up the bag. ""Every single page.""
