Chapter 6

Arthur backed away from the desk until the small of his back hit the edge of the heavy oak bookshelves. His eyes were wide, bloodshot, and fixed entirely on Elena as she stepped over the threshold into the study. The water dripping slightly from the hem of her sleek wetsuit formed small, dark puddles on the ancient rug, but she seemed completely unbothered by the mess. Her posture was upright, her gaze piercing, and her expression completely devoid of the shock or fear that Arthur expected to see on the face of a drowning victim.

“You… you were in the water,” Arthur stammered, his voice dropping an octave as he tried to regain some shred of his former authority. He reached behind him, his fingers blindly searching the shelf for a heavy bookend or a brass paperweight. “I watched you sink. The current out there is five knots. No one swims out of that trench.”

“You always underestimated the technology you signed off on, Arthur,” Elena said, her voice calm, clear, and steady. She walked toward him with slow, deliberate steps, the glowing blue neon lines on her suit casting an eerie, futuristic light across the vintage leather-bound volumes. “You assumed the wetsuit was just for thermal protection during our oceanic expeditions. You never bothered to read the secondary patents.”

Clara regained her composure slightly, stepping out from behind the desk, her emerald green satin dress shimmering in the amber firelight. Her face twisted into a mask of bitter desperation. “It doesn’t matter how she survived, Arthur! Call the private security detail! Have her physically removed from the property right now! She’s trespassing!”

Elena turned her gaze slowly toward Clara, a faint, cold smile touching the corners of her mouth. “Security detail, Clara? You might want to check your phone. The private guards were placed on administrative leave twenty minutes ago under the provisions of Protocol Black. They report to the primary shareholder now. And as of midnight, that is me.”

Clara’s hand flew to her designer handbag, where her smartphone rested. She pulled it out with trembling fingers, her eyes scanning the screen. The display was completely dead, locked behind a mandatory system update screen featuring a stark corporate logo—the Vane Maritime shield overlaid with a glowing blue biometric fingerprint.

“This is illegal,” Arthur hissed, lunging forward with a sudden burst of desperate courage. He reached out to grab Elena by the wrist, aiming directly for the high-tech ring on her finger, hoping to rip it off and break the biometric loop.

Elena didn’t flinch. She simply sidestepped his clumsy lunge with practiced ease, raised her forearm, and drove the reinforced heel of her palm upward into his chest. The impact was crisp and controlled, sending the larger man stumbling backward over his own desk chair. Arthur crashed heavily to the floor, knocking over a stack of financial reports and gasping for air as the wind was knocked violently from his lungs.
