Chapter 2

Arthur Vane stared down at the sophisticated smart watch strapped to his left wrist with a look of mounting, absolute horror. The emerald green dress of his mistress, Clara, rustled softly as she stepped closer to him on the mahogany deck, her expression shifting from casual amusement to sudden, nervous tension. The digital display on Arthur’s watch flashed in rhythmic crimson pulses, completely overriding the yacht’s primary navigation and financial systems. The automated emergency protocols he had spent years trying to legally dismantle were now running live, executed by an unseen, untouchable authority.
“The emergency protocols were automated?!” Arthur shouted into the empty night air, his voice cracking with a sudden, bitter panic that he tried desperately to conceal from Clara.
He tapped frantically at the glass screen, his fingers slick with nervous sweat. Every swipe brought up a new corporate freeze notice. The Vane Maritime primary accounts were locked. The international shipping manifests were being re-routed to an encrypted offshore trust. Most terrifying of all, the board of directors’ emergency succession clause had just been triggered by an override code that only the primary shareholder possessed—a code tied directly to Elena’s vital signs.
Clara placed a manicured hand on his dark navy captain’s sleeve, her voice trembling slightly. “Arthur, what is happening? The stock exchange alert just buzzed on my phone. Our European freight lines have suspended all operations. Who authorized this?”
“She did,” Arthur whispered, the name catching in his throat like broken glass. He looked out over the dark, churning wake of the yacht, half-expecting to see her floating back up to the surface. But there was nothing out there except the vast, indifferent expanse of the ocean. He had checked her pulse before the push; he had assumed the cold water would do what his lawyers could not. Yet the automated systems were responding as if she were sitting right beside him at the corporate boardroom table, signing execution orders with a fountain pen.

The sleek interceptor boat they had kept moored at the stern for emergency getaways suddenly powered up on its own, its high-intensity LED headlights blazing to life, cutting bright white beams across the dark water. The autonomous docking clamps released with a loud, mechanical snap. The boat was programmed to return to the main corporate harbor—a harbor that was now fully under the control of the Protocol Black mandate.
Arthur’s heart hammered against his ribs. He realized with terrifying clarity that Elena had anticipated this betrayal long before tonight. She had built the safety nets, tested the fail-safes, and wired the entire corporate infrastructure to her own heartbeat. By trying to eliminate her physically, he had triggered the digital trigger that locked him out of his own kingdom.
