Chapter 12: Arthur’s Intervention

Before Evelyn could force Leo across the open expanse of the muddy yard toward the utility trailer, the heavy wooden gate at the end of the farm lane swung open with a loud creak. A beat-up red pickup truck bumped aggressively down the drive, bypassing the blinding spray of the irrigation sprinklers and pulling directly up behind the police cruiser.
Arthur killed the engine of his truck and leaped out with surprising agility for a man his age. He walked straight up to Deputy Miller, who was just walking back from the screeching alarm box, dripping wet and visibly frustrated.
"Deputy!" Arthur called out, pointing a weathered finger toward the back of the house. "Don't let them move that boy! I saw the woman dragging someone toward the back shed just now while your sirens were blaring!"
Deputy Miller’s eyes widened. "Mr. Higgins, I thought you were supposed to stay at home."
"I saw what was happening through my binoculars from my kitchen porch," Arthur said firmly. "That child is in grave danger. If you wait for a warrant, they'll be gone into the timber."
Inside the farmhouse, Evelyn froze in the doorway of the mudroom, clutching Leo’s arm so tightly her fingernails dug into his skin. She looked out through the small wire-reinforced glass pane and saw Arthur talking animatedly with the deputy. She tapped her phone frantically.
"David! The neighbor is here with the cop. They're heading toward the back door right now!"
In his Seattle office, David slammed his fist onto his desk. The carefully constructed web of control was unraveling in real time. On his monitors, he watched Arthur and the deputy stride purposefully around the side of the house toward the mudroom entrance. David knew that if they breached the house, his entire life’s work—the algorithms, the behavioral control patents, the offshore accounts funded by the research foundation—would collapse into a criminal investigation.
"Lock the mudroom door manually from the inside!" David barked through the speaker. "Buy me two minutes. I'm wiping the primary server logs remotely."
Evelyn dropped her phone, lunged forward, and slammed the heavy deadbolt on the mudroom door just as a heavy fist hammered against the outer wood.

"Open up! Sheriff’s Department!" Deputy Miller’s voice boomed through the door, followed immediately by Arthur shouting, "Open the door, Evelyn, we know you're in there!"
Leo stood shivering in the dim hallway, water dripping from his clothes, staring at the door as the sounds of the outside world finally broke through the digital walls of his prison.
