Chapter 10: The Knock on the Door

Deputy Miller walked briskly away from the smoldering brush pile near the barn, realizing quickly that the smoke was coming from a discarded chemical canister rather than an active fire. Frowning, he dusted off his hands and walked purposefully toward the front porch of the farmhouse. The property felt entirely too quiet, too still, like a ghost town frozen in time.

He stepped up onto the wooden porch and pounded his heavy knuckles against the front door. "Sheriff’s Department!" he called out, his voice carrying clearly through the heavy timber. "Open up, please."

Inside the darkened living room, Evelyn stood motionless by the base of the basement stairs, staring at the front door through the gap in the interior hallway. She held her breath, her hand gripping her smartphone tightly as David’s digital instructions fed directly into her wireless earbud.

"Do not respond," David commanded from Seattle, his voice cold and resolute. "Let him knock. Without a warrant signed by a judge, he cannot force entry unless there's an immediate, verifiable exigent circumstance. And our acoustic masking is running—he won't hear anything from inside."

Deputy Miller knocked again, louder this time. "Ma'am, I know someone is inside. We received a report regarding the welfare of a child living at this address. Open the door immediately, or I will be forced to secure a warrant and return with backup."

Down in the cold, damp root cellar, Leo heard every word. The deputy’s voice sounded like a lifeline dropped straight into the abyss. He opened his mouth, drawing in a deep breath to scream as loud as he could, but Evelyn anticipated the move. With terrifying speed, she dropped the flashlight, clamped her hand over Leo’s mouth, and drove her other hand hard against his chest, pinning him back against the damp stone wall.

Leo struggled silently, tears streaming down his face, his small chest burning for oxygen. Evelyn stared down at him with ruthless intensity, whispering fiercely in his ear: "If you make a sound, I swear your father will lock you in the dark for a week without water."

Outside, Deputy Miller waited for another thirty seconds. He shined his flashlight through a small crack in the shutter, seeing only pitch-black darkness within. Frustrated, he pulled out his radio.

"Dispatch, Unit Four. No response at the primary residence. The house appears secured and vacant, though I suspect occupants are inside dodging contact. I’m requesting a supervisor and a search warrant based on the neighbor's report."

"Copy, Unit Four. Supervisor is en route."

Inside the cellar, Evelyn slowly relaxed her grip as she heard the deputy step off the porch and walk back toward his cruiser. Leo slumped forward, gasping for air, his spirit broken and crushed beneath the weight of his mother's cruelty and his father's invisible, technological cage.
