Chapter 6: Aftershocks

The morning sunlight filtering through the gothic stone arches of the campus quad felt sharp and unforgiving. Word of the server room incident had traveled through the student body with astonishing speed, shifting from whispered dormitory rumors into a serious institutional inquiry. Maya sat at a secluded wooden table near the back of the library, her laptop open as she reviewed the digital audit trails she had compiled the previous night. The physical environment around her was quiet, but the campus digital network was buzzing with speculation. Bryce had spent the morning trying to track down mutual acquaintances to downplay the event, claiming Maya had blown a harmless joke completely out of proportion. Yet, the university administration did not view tampering with secure infrastructure and unauthorized confinement as a laughing matter. The dean of student affairs had already issued formal notifications requiring both students to attend a disciplinary review board hearing at the end of the week. Maya felt a lingering tension in her shoulders, the physical manifestation of stress she had suppressed while locked in the cold room. She knew that standing up against someone as well-connected as Bryce carried long-term social and academic repercussions. His family were major donors to the engineering department, a fact that historically granted certain students immunity from minor infractions. But this was not a minor infraction; it was a matter of professional ethics and personal safety. As she adjusted the cuffs of her dark hoodie, she noticed out of the corner of her eye that one of the students who had been present in the hallway was approaching her table. It was the young woman who had been holding her phone during the incident, looking visibly uncomfortable and carrying a cup of campus coffee. The girl stopped a few feet away, hesitating before speaking, her expression a mix of guilt and hesitation. Maya closed her laptop halfway, fixing her gaze on the visitor with an open, non-judgmental expression, waiting to see what the crumbling facade of Bryce’s inner circle would finally yield.
