Chapter 11: The Defense Fails

When it was Bryce’s turn to address the committee, his carefully rehearsed explanations dissolved under cross-examination. Stuttering slightly, he attempted to claim that the server room lockout was merely an informal coding challenge gone wrong, a misunderstanding exacerbated by an overly sensitive reaction from a competitive peer. He tried to suggest that his student ID credentials might have been used without his explicit knowledge by someone else borrowing his terminal. The associate dean of academic affairs interrupted him mid-sentence, pointing out that the network logs explicitly tied the MAC address of his personal laptop and his biometric login token to the exact coordinates of the hallway keypad at the time of the incident. The committee chair pressed further, asking Bryce to explain the context of the pre-planning conversation captured in Chloe’s video footage, where he explicitly discussed targeting Maya’s academic standing for public humiliation. Bryce had no answer. He stared down at the polished mahogany surface of the table, his fingers twitching nervously against the fabric of his grey sweater. The silence in the hearing room was suffocating, punctuated only by the low hum of the overhead ventilation system. The contrast between Maya’s calm, documented presentation and Bryce’s unraveling fabrications was absolute. For the first time in his academic career, charm, family connections, and institutional apathy failed to shield him from direct consequences. Maya watched him quietly, feeling no sense of triumphant glee, only a profound and stabilizing sense of closure. The system was finally doing what it was designed to do: protecting integrity and penalizing bad-faith sabotage. As the committee chair adjourned the session for private deliberation, Bryce gathered his papers with trembling hands and rushed out of the room without making eye contact with anyone.
