Chapter 8: The Confrontation at Home

The heavy oak front door of the Vance estate swung open to reveal a cavernous, silent foyer. Victoria sat alone in the dim light of the formal drawing room, a glass of scotch untouched on the glass coffee table before her. She had not changed out of her black evening gown; the fabric seemed to absorb the shadows of the room, mirroring the darkness closing in around her.

Footsteps echoed sharply on the marble entryway. Julian walked into the drawing room, his coat over his arm, his face carved from stone. He did not look at her as he tossed his car keys onto the mahogany console table with a sharp clatter.

“They have his confession,” Julian said, his voice flat and devoid of inflection.

Victoria did not look up immediately. She swirled the amber liquid in her glass, watching the ice cube trace slow circles against the rim. “Marcus lies when it suits him, Julian. You know that. He would sell his own mother to shave six months off a prison sentence.”

“He signed the financial disclosures, Victoria,” Julian said, stepping into the dim light of the lamp. He dropped a thick stack of printed bank statements onto the coffee table, scattering the papers across the glass. “He provided the routing numbers for the offshore accounts. The accounts you opened using my corporate seal.”

Victoria finally raised her eyes. The defiance that had defined her public persona all evening was gone, replaced by a cold, resigned weariness. “The club debts were piling up. You were too busy with the new acquisitions to notice that our lifestyle was bleeding us dry. I had to do something.”

“You had to steal from our own safe and frame a young girl who works three jobs just to keep her family afloat?” Julian’s voice rose slightly, the restrained fury finally breaking through his armor. “Is that what your social standing is worth to you? Other people’s lives?”

“I didn't intend for Clara to take the fall permanently!” Victoria snapped back, her voice cracking with suppressed hysteria. “It was supposed to be an insurance payout! Marcus said the policy would cover it twice over!”

“An insurance fraud scheme,” Julian whispered, shaking his head slowly as he looked at the woman he had loved for over a decade. “You traded our integrity for liquidity. And you lied to my face in that hotel corridor.”

The silence that followed was heavier than any argument. The golden age of their marriage was dead, buried beneath layers of greed, deceit, and moral bankruptcy. Julian walked toward the grand staircase, pausing at the bottom step without turning back.

“Pack your bags, Victoria. The lawyers will handle the rest in the morning.”
