Chapter 2: The Security Feed

Security Chief Miller led Julian, Victoria, and the trembling Clara down a carpeted corridor away from the ballroom noise, guiding them toward the subterranean control room. The heavy metal door swung open to reveal a wall of glowing monitors flickering with live feeds of the hotel’s opulent interior. Miller sat before the central console, his fingers flying across the keyboard to cue up the playback from the third-floor VIP hallway.
On the primary screen, high-definition footage showed the corridor outside Victoria’s dressing room. The timestamp read 8:14 PM. The camera angle captured the ornate double doors standing slightly ajar. Moments later, Clara appeared on screen, pushing her stainless-steel utility cart, entering the suite, and exiting two minutes later with an empty tray. Her movements were hurried, tired, but completely straightforward.
Victoria leaned over the console, her eyes narrowed in scrutiny. “Look at her. She’s rushing. She hid it in her apron pocket.”
“Watch the rest, Victoria,” Julian said quietly, resting a steady hand on the back of her chair.
Miller scrubbed the timeline forward, switching to a secondary camera angle that captured the blind spot near the service alcove. The footage revealed a figure Victoria had not anticipated seeing near her suite at that specific hour. It was not Clara.

Julian’s jaw tightened as he watched the screen. The evidence was unfolding with mathematical precision, dismantling Victoria’s confident narrative piece by piece. Clara looked down at her own feet, her hands clasped tightly together, bracing for whatever blow was about to land. She felt the heavy burden of suspicion beginning to shift, though the true depth of the deception remained hidden in the shadows of the hotel’s dimly lit corridors.
Miller paused the playback, freezing the frame on a gloved hand sliding a velvet jewelry pouch into an exterior side pocket. The black handbag resting on the service trolley did not belong to Clara. It belonged to someone else entirely, someone who walked these halls with absolute impunity and knew every blind spot of the hotel’s expensive security apparatus.
