Chapter 2 - The Silence Before The Legal Storm

The rain began to mist against the windshield of Emma’s sedan as she sat parked two blocks away from the jewelry store. Her breathing was slow, measured, keeping the adrenaline under tight control. The ring was gone, surrendered back to the corporate machine that had tried to swallow her life. For five years, she had stood beside Julian, building Apex Logistics from a dusty garage operation into a multi-million-dollar shipping juggernaut. She had done the books, the late nights, the sacrifices, while Julian played the public visionary. Victoria had been a quiet acquisition in that corporate machine—a junior marketing executive brought on to handle client relations, who had quickly become Julian’s favored distraction.
Emma’s phone lit up on the dashboard, displaying a caller ID she had not expected to see tonight. It was Marcus Vance, the senior partner at Vance & Associates, the legal shark she had hired three days ago when the first anonymous financial tip landed in her personal inbox. Marcus didn't do social calls, and he certainly didn't call after business hours unless something monumental had shifted in the chess game.
Emma swiped the screen and pressed the phone to her ear.
“Marcus,” Emma said, her voice steady. “Did the injunction go through?”
“It went through, Emma, but we have a complication that changes our entire timeline,” Marcus replied, his voice grave and low. “Thirty minutes ago, Julian didn't just call me to negotiate. He liquidated his primary personal liquid assets. All of them.”
Emma’s grip on the steering wheel tightened until her knuckles turned white. “Liquidated? To offshore accounts?”

“Worse,” Marcus said, pausing for dramatic effect. “He transferred every single liquid dollar into an anonymous holding shell company registered under Victoria’s maiden name. If we don’t freeze the corporate board seats by midnight, he’s going to strip Apex Logistics bare before your lawyers even walk into court tomorrow morning.”
