Chapter 12 - Fire At Bay 4

The rain had turned into a steady, freezing drizzle by the time Emma’s car pulled up outside Apex Logistics Central Warehouse, Bay 4. The industrial park was pitch black, save for the flickering amber security lights over the loading docks. Special Agent Miller’s unmarked cruiser pulled in right behind her, its headlights cutting through the mist.

“Stay back, Emma,” Agent Miller warned, resting her hand on her sidearm as she stepped out into the cold night air. “This is a controlled federal perimeter now.”

“Victoria is inside with a gas can,” Emma said, pushing her car door open. “If we wait for the tactical team to breach the side doors, she’ll torch the entire logistics database. Every shipping manifest, every financial record from the last five years is stored in that specific bay.”

Without waiting for the agent’s permission, Emma darted toward the side personnel door, which stood slightly ajar. The heavy scent of industrial gasoline hung thick in the damp air, stinging her eyes as she slipped inside the cavernous warehouse.

The interior was a massive maze of towering metal shelving units stacked high with shipping crates. In the center of Bay 4, a single overhead spotlight illuminated a concrete circle where Victoria stood, holding a plastic red gas can in one hand and a cheap plastic lighter in the other. Her sleeveless beige dress was stained with dark splashes of fuel, her long dark hair matted against her face.

“Don't move, Emma!” Victoria shrieked, her voice echoing off the corrugated metal walls. She flicked the lighter open, a tiny yellow flame dancing in the darkness just inches from the puddle of gasoline pooling around her feet. “You ruined everything! Julian is in handcuffs, my father’s investments are frozen, and you think you just walk away with the whole company?”

Emma stopped twenty feet away, raising her hands slowly, keeping her breathing steady and controlled. She didn't look angry; her expression was a mix of profound pity and razor-sharp focus.

“Victoria, look around you,” Emma said calmly, her voice carrying easily across the concrete floor. “Arthur Vance and Julian are already in federal custody. They used you as a scapegoat from day one. If you drop that lighter, you’re not burning my company—you’re destroying the only evidence that proves your father didn't betray you either.”

Victoria’s hand trembled violently, the small flame flickering dangerously close to the fuel on the floor. “You’re lying! My father built this company!”

“Your father was sold out by Arthur Vance twenty years ago,” Emma said, taking one slow step forward. “Just like he sold out my father. Look at the ledger in my car, Victoria. Your family was ruined by the exact same men you’ve been working for.”
