Chapter 9: The Arrival**
Clara reached the shoulder of Route 9 just as her physical strength completely gave out. Her gown was torn, her knees were bruised and bleeding, and her breath came in ragged, wheezing gasps.
She collapsed against the steel guardrail, the cold rain washing away the tears on her face.
In the distance, the roar of a powerful engine cut through the storm. Two halogen headlights pierced the gloom, speeding down the empty two-lane highway. The vehicle skidded to an abrupt halt ten yards from where she lay, tires smoking on the wet asphalt.
The driver’s door flew open.
"Clara!"
It was Julian. His suit jacket was gone, his white shirt was stained with grease and rain, and a fresh cut marked his temple, but his eyes were filled with unmistakable love and terror. He threw himself into the mud beside her, pulling her tightly into his arms.
"I’m here. I’m right here," Julian choked out, pressing his forehead against hers, his tears mingling with the rain on her cheeks. "I’m so sorry, my love. I’m so sorry I wasn't there."
"They set a trap, Julian..." Clara sobbed, burying her face in his shoulder. "Your mother... Richard... they took the ring... they wanted to take our baby."

"I know," Julian said, his voice dropping into a steady, dangerous calm that Clara had never heard from him before. "I know everything. And tonight, it ends."
