Chapter 2: The Severed Reservation

The air between them turned electric.

Vanessa laughed—a sharp, brittle sound that drew glances from three flight attendants standing at the podium.

""Oh, please, Margaret,"" Vanessa sneered, stepping back toward Bradley. ""You gave Bradley a joint signatory line on your small-business account when your husband died. Bradley is a senior vice president of regional logistics! He earned this vacation. You’re just riding along on his coattails because you couldn't bear to spend another Thanksgiving alone in that dusty workshop.""

Margaret looked past Vanessa directly into her son's eyes.

""Bradley,"" Margaret asked gently. ""Did you tell Vanessa that your company paid for this holiday?""

Bradley swallowed hard, his throat working. He looked down at the boarding passes in his trembling hands, the pretense of corporate success collapsing into the posture of a guilty child.

""Mom... we were going to settle the balance after the quarterly distribution,"" Bradley stammered, his voice dropping so low it was almost lost beneath the intercom announcement for Flight 842.

""There is no quarterly distribution, Bradley,"" Margaret said with unwavering clarity. ""You were terminated from the logistics firm six weeks ago for unauthorized expense claims. You haven't paid your own mortgage in three months. You charged this entire forty-thousand-dollar vacation to my press reserve account while I was in Boston attending the Antiquarian Book Fair.""

Vanessa’s smirk vanished instantly. Her head whipped toward Bradley, her eyes widening in sheer, unvarnished horror.

""What is she talking about, Brad?"" Vanessa hissed, grabbing his arm with such force her knuckles turned white. ""You told my father your firm gave you this executive retreat as a retention bonus!""

Margaret did not wait for her son to construct another lie.

She tapped her smartphone screen, opened the concierge portal for the card, and spoke calmly into the speaker.

""This is Margaret Vance, sole owner of Vance Heritage Press. Cancel reservations for seats 2A and 2B on Flight 842, and revoke the guest authorization on the Saint Lucia villa. Maintain seat 3C for myself, and transfer the remaining balance to the Savannah Children’s Literacy Foundation.""

The representative on the line confirmed the cancellation with a crisp, polite tone.

At the podium, the gate agent’s terminal beeped twice. The red light flashed: **BOARDING PASSES INVALIDATED.**

Margaret lowered her phone, returned the titanium card to her purse, and zipped the pocket closed.

""Enjoy your afternoon, Bradley,"" Margaret said softly. ""The apartment keys you took from the print shop desk are on my kitchen counter. Don't come back to the press.""

She turned her roller bag toward the terminal exit, stepping forward with an upright, tranquil stride, leaving the two of them standing in the boarding queue as the realization of their ruin settled over them like lead.
