Chapter 10 - The Override Key

Leo launched his body forward through the open air, closing the distance between himself and the stranger in a fraction of a second. The man in the grey jumpsuit raised his palm to project the hard-light barrier, but Leo anticipated the move, twisting his body mid-air and sliding low across the damp grass.

His shoulder slammed hard into the man’s knees, taking the stranger completely by surprise. The man staggered backward, his boots sliding across the turf as he lost his balance, dropping the aluminum briefcase onto the grass with a sharp metallic clatter.

"Leo! Look out!" Karen screamed from the porch.

Before the stranger could recover his footing, Leo scrambled across the turf, snatching up the briefcase from the grass. The digital wireframe models of his family were still hovering above the open lid, casting a frantic red glow over his face. He didn't waste a second searching for the manual override port; he flipped the briefcase on its side, tore open the small magnetic flap, and jammed the bottom corner of his dead smartphone directly into the nine-pin serial slot.

The phone’s screen flickered instantly, throwing off a blinding flash of white light as thousands of lines of raw code began to cascade across the cracked glass display.

The stranger in the grey jumpsuit regained his footing, stepping forward with robotic precision, his hand outstretched to grab Leo’s collar. "Disconnect the peripheral immediately. You are violating protocol."

"Go to hell," Leo snarled, slamming his thumb down onto the physical home button of his phone while holding it deep inside the override port.

A piercing, high-frequency alarm shrieked from the briefcase, so loud it forced Karen and Evelyn to cover their ears and drop to their knees on the porch. The entire vertical shaft of cascading code shuddered violently, the white fog at the end of the driveway rolling backward like a receding tide as the digital horizon began to tear apart at the seams.

Arthur held Toby tight, watching in breathless awe as the sky above them transformed from deep violet back into the brilliant, natural blue of a normal summer afternoon. The fake sun overhead flickered twice, stabilized, and then burned with a warm, authentic light that cast real, heat-bearing rays across their skin.

The stranger froze in place, his arm outstretched toward Leo. His pale eyes dilated as a series of error messages scrolled rapidly across his pupils, reflecting the white light of the briefcase interface.

"Error... core routine interrupted," the man recited, his voice glitching and stuttering like a damaged audio track. "System reboot... mandatory reset..."

With a soft, electrical hiss, the man’s knees buckled, and he collapsed onto the grass, tumbling forward into the weeds where he lay completely motionless, staring blankly up at the restored blue sky.

Leo panted heavily, pulling his phone out of the briefcase port. The screen was smoking slightly, the battery swollen and blackened, but the device displayed a single, steady word in plain black text: UNLOCKED.

Karen hurried across the lawn, dropping to her knees beside her son and wrapping her arms around Leo in a desperate, tearful embrace. "You did it, Leo. You actually did it. Look—the fog is gone!"

Leo turned his head to look down the driveway. The thick wall of white mist had vanished entirely, replaced by the familiar asphalt road winding away through the sunlit pine forest toward the distant highway. Real cars could be seen passing by in the distance, their engines humming a normal, mundane tune.

Arthur walked up slowly, leaning on his cane, a profound sense of relief washing over his tired face. "Well I'll be damned. We're back in the real world."

"Not quite yet, Grandpa," Leo said quietly, standing up and looking back at the cottage behind them.

The front door, which had been locked tight against them for hours, slowly clicked open on its own, swinging inward to reveal the interior of the house.

The furniture, the family photos, the kitchen table, and Toby’s stuffed bear were all back in their rightful places.

As Leo stepped onto the porch to cross the threshold, his phone buzzed violently in his hand, displaying a single new text message from an unknown number: WELCOME BACK TO REALITY. NOW FIND THE REAL DOOR.
