Chapter 8 - The Master Bedroom Secret

The mention of the floor safe seemed to snap whatever fragile thread of sanity David had left. He shoved past Sarah with brutal force, sprinting up the steps and throwing himself through the front door like a man possessed. A loud, echoing crash came from down the hallway as he slammed against the master bedroom door, frantically turning the brass handle only to find it spinning loosely in his grip.
"It’s welded shut!" David screamed from inside the house, his voice muffled by the thick timber of the door. "Someone welded the deadbolt from the outside!"
Sarah walked up the front steps with a chilling, deadpan expression, stopping just short of the threshold. She didn't bother trying to open the door. Instead, she turned to Elena, her eyes burning with a bitter, vindictive malice.
"You think he kept his most important secrets in that floor safe, don't you, Elena?" Sarah asked, her voice dropping to a theatrical whisper that cut through the evening chill.
Elena raised an eyebrow, sensing the sudden shift in the psychological battlefield. "Are you telling me there's something else hidden in this house?"
"Something much worse than bearer bonds or offshore bank accounts," Sarah laughed softly, a harsh, grating sound. "David didn't just inherit his father's debts. He inherited his father's silence regarding the night the municipal zoning board records were mysteriously altered twenty years ago."
Julian stepped closer to the porch, his professional demeanor instantly sharpening. "Elaborate, Mrs. Miller."
Sarah turned her back to the door, leaning against the wooden railing as she watched David hammering futilely against the wood from the inside. "The entire foundation of this suburban development is built on an illegal environmental dumping site. David’s father took a massive payoff from the chemical plant down the road to falsify the soil reports so this subdivision could be approved."
Martha gasped, clutching her chest as if she had been struck with a physical blow. "That's impossible. Arthur was an honest man. He built this neighborhood with his own hands."
"Arthur built a gilded cage over a toxic waste dump," Sarah corrected ruthlessly, pulling a flash drive from her pocket and dangling it between her fingers. "And David has been blackmailing the city council for the last decade using the original unredacted soil samples stored right here in the attic crawlspace."

Elena stared at the small piece of plastic hanging from Sarah’s fingertips, realizing with a jolt of cold horror that the game she thought she had won was vastly larger and much more dangerous than she had ever imagined.
