Chapter 2 - The Ghost in the Deed

David pushed past Sarah, his breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps as he stared at the yellow file folder in Elena’s hand. The afternoon sun caught the crisp edges of the official county seal stamped across the top document. Martha slowly stood up from the porch steps, her plum-colored dress rustling softly as she approached Elena like a ghost walking toward its own grave.
"You're lying," David muttered, shaking his head with a pathetic, desperate denial. "My name is on that primary mortgage. My signature has to be on the sale transfer. It’s the law, Elena. You can’t just sell a house out from under the people living in it."
Elena adjusted the collar of her grey shirt, her movements infuriatingly calm compared to the frantic panic gripping her former family. She pulled a single sheet from the folder and held it out, though she kept it just out of David’s reach.
" You forgot about the power of attorney you signed back when we bought this place, David," Elena said, her voice dropping to a dangerous, icy whisper. "You were so busy hiding your corporate embezzlement losses that you handed me total financial control just to keep your name off the public seizure lists. Legally, ethically, and fundamentally, this house belonged entirely to me."
Sarah let out a choked gasp, clapping a hand over her mouth. "You set us up. All these years, you let us pay the property taxes and the maintenance while you waited for the right market peak."
"I waited for justice," Elena corrected sharply, turning her gaze toward Martha. "And you, Martha. You knew about this transfer for three months, didn't you? Why else would you have started packing your antique porcelain sets into boxes last Tuesday?"
Martha’s eyes darted away, her silence screaming confirmation louder than any words could manage.
David lunged forward, his hands clawing at the air between them. "Who bought it, Elena? Who the hell owns our home?"

Elena smiled slowly, a grim, humorless expression that didn't reach her eyes. "You’ll find out when the eviction sheriff serves you the formal lockout notice in exactly twenty minutes."
