Chapter 7 - The Breach at Midnight

The wooden frame of the screen door splintered with a deafening crack as a dark-clad operative kicked it inward, stepping directly into the kitchen with a suppressed rifle raised at shoulder height. Mark didn't hesitate. Adrenaline surged through his veins, overriding his fatigue as he grabbed a heavy cast-iron skillet from the stove and hurled it with lethal precision across the room. The iron pan caught the intruder squarely in the chest, sending him staggering backward against the doorframe. Torres fired two muffled shots into the floor beside the operative's boots, a clear warning to freeze or face fatal consequences. The intruder dropped his rifle, raising his hands in surrender as Mark closed the distance and slammed him into the refrigerator.
"Who’s outside?" Mark demanded, pressing his forearm against the operative's throat while ripping a tactical radio off the man's vest. The radio hissed with static before a cold, mechanical voice crackled through the speaker: Alpha team, report. Target structure is surrounded. Eliminate all occupants and secure the collateral. Mark’s blood turned to ice. They were already calling Lily 'collateral.' He keyed the radio mic, altering his voice to sound gruff and mechanical. "Alpha team has encountered unexpected resistance. Send backup to the perimeter fence immediately." A harsh grunt of acknowledgment came back over the static before the connection was abruptly cut.
Torres grabbed Mark by the shoulder, hauling him away from the stunned operative. "We don't have time to interrogate him, Mark. There are at least four more operators moving in through the side yard. We need to wake Lily up right now and get out through the storm cellar." Mark spun around and sprinted down the hallway, bursting into Lily’s bedroom. The room was bathed in the soft, blue glow of a nightlight shaped like a star. Lily was sitting straight up in her bed, clutching her stuffed rabbit to her chest, her pastel pink-and-blue tie-dye hoodie already pulled over her pajamas. Her eyes were wide with fear, but she wasn't crying. She had heard the shouting from the kitchen.
"Daddy, are the bad men back?" Lily asked, her voice trembling slightly as she reached out a small hand toward him. Mark rushed to the bedside, scooped her up into his arms along with her blanket, and held her fiercely against his chest. "We're going on a little adventure, sweetie. Just hold onto me tightly and don't look back, no matter what you hear," Mark whispered, his voice cracking with emotion as Torres sprinted into the room carrying a heavy tactical duffel bag filled with weapons and emergency rations. "Through the closet," Torres commanded, wrenching open the door to Lily's walk-in wardrobe and shoving aside a row of hanging clothes to reveal a heavy wooden hatch set directly into the floorboards.

Mark scrambled down the hidden ladder into the damp darkness of the storm cellar, Torres covering their rear with his pistol raised toward the bedroom door. As Mark descended into the underground tunnel, a series of heavy thuds echoed from the front of the house—the sound of the front door being blown off its hinges by a breaching charge. The entire house shook, sending dust and debris raining down through the open hatch. Mark pulled Lily closer, shielding her small body with his own as the muffled sound of automatic gunfire erupted from the kitchen above them, turning their quiet suburban home into a war zone.
