Chapter 12 - The Ascent to the Bunker

The air inside the sawmill filled with a choking cloud of acrid cordite smoke and flying splinters of wood as Torres laid down relentless cover fire, keeping the Blackwood operatives pinned behind massive oak beams. Mark shoved Vance violently away, sending the handler crashing into a stack of rusted iron pipes, then snatched up Vance's dropped sidearm from the dusty floorboards. "Move, Mark! The whole valley is crawling with reinforcements!" Torres shouted over the roar of gunfire, sprinting toward the rear exit that led directly up the steep, fog-shrouded logging trail toward the command bunker. Mark didn't look back; he vaulted over a collapsed workbench and sprinted out into the freezing mountain air, his boots pounding against the rocky trail.
They climbed at a reckless, lung-burning pace, scrambling up the steep incline of the Blue Ridge escarpment while the distant pops of pursuit echoed from the sawmill below. The trees grew sparser the higher they climbed, replaced by jagged rock formations and patches of crusted snow that crunched beneath their boots. Ahead of them, tucked seamlessly into the side of a sheer granite cliff, stood the heavy steel blast doors of the old command bunker, its exterior covered in moss and mountain scrub. Standing by the entrance, clutching her stuffed rabbit and shivering slightly in her mud-stained pastel hoodie, was Lily. She looked down the trail with wide, tear-filled eyes as her father and Torres broke through the brush and collapsed against the reinforced steel door.
Torres immediately rushed to the electronic keypad set into the stone wall beside the door, punching in a twelve-digit override sequence while his hands shook from exhaustion and adrenaline. A heavy pneumatic hiss echoed through the rock face as the massive steel bolts slid back with a thunderous clank, and the heavy door slowly swung inward, revealing the dim, emergency-lit interior of the underground facility. Mark scooped Lily up into his arms, burying his face in her hair as he carried her inside, followed closely by Torres, who slammed the override button to seal the blast door shut just as the first wave of Blackwood snipers broke through the tree line below.
Inside, the bunker was a marvel of Cold War engineering—rows of blinking computer terminals, emergency generators humming quietly in the corner, and shelves stocked with rations and medical supplies. Mark gently set Lily down on a cot in the corner, wrapping a thermal blanket around her shoulders to stop her shivering. He turned his attention to Torres, who was already frantically typing commands into the master terminal console at the center of the room. The glowing green screens cast an eerie, surreal light across Torres’s scarred face as lines of complex code scrolled rapidly down the monitors.

"Is the uplink secure, Ray?" Mark asked, stepping up behind his friend and keeping his hand resting on the grip of his sidearm. Torres hit the enter key with a decisive slap, watching the progress bar crawl across the screen. "It’s connecting directly to an independent international whistleblower network, bypassing every proxy server Vance and Blackwood control. But we only have about three minutes before they deploy a portable breaching charge to blow these blast doors open." Suddenly, the main monitor flickered violently, replacing the code with a live video feed from a camera mounted outside the bunker doors. On the screen, Agent Vance stood flanked by six heavily armed operatives carrying a thermal thermite cutter, staring directly into the camera lens with a cold, unforgiving smile.
