Chapter 9 - The Engine Beneath the Floor

The ground trembled rhythmically, a deep, bone-rattling vibration that sent loose pebbles bouncing across the gravel path. Sharda grabbed Julian's hand, her fingers interlocking tightly with his as the towering brick facade of Sector 4 seemed to shudder under the strain of whatever was awakening deep below.

"What is that sound?" Sharda shouted over the escalating roar, her eyes locked on Dr. Vance, who stood motionless in the glare of the SUV's headlights.

"That," Dr. Vance replied calmly, her voice carrying easily across the clearing, "is the archive purge. Every file, every backup, every scrap of your previous existence is currently passing through an incinerator core heated to two thousand degrees."

Miller burst out of the sedan, weapon drawn, pointing her service pistol directly at Dr. Vance's chest. "Shut it down, Vance! The federal marshal's office has a warrant for the entire archive!"

Dr. Vance didn't even flinch at the barrel of the gun. She raised a single eyebrow, a faint, condescending smile playing on her lips. "Federal marshals, Agent Miller? Or just a rogue agent trying to recover her own deleted personnel file before the oversight committee reviews her pension?"

Miller's hand wavered for a fraction of a second—just a microscopic twitch, but enough for Dr. Vance's driver to step out from the passenger side of the SUV with a heavy tactical riot shield.

"Julian, Sharda—run for the drainage pipe!" Miller yelled without looking back, keeping her sights locked on Dr. Vance. "To the left of the loading dock! It leads directly into the sub-basement server room!"

Julian didn't hesitate. He pulled Sharda toward a rusted corrugated iron pipe half-hidden beneath a tangle of blackberry bushes. The metal opening was dark, smelling of stagnant water and damp concrete, but it was the only gap in the perimeter fence.

"I'm not going in there," Sharda hesitated, staring into the pitch-black void of the pipe. "We'll get trapped."

"If we stay here, Dr. Vance wins," Julian said fiercely, dropping to his hands and knees. "Give me your hand, Sharda. I know the way. My dad drew the map on the back of my first birthday card."

Sharda swallowed hard, forced her fears down, and crawled into the dark pipe right behind him. The metal echoed hollowly beneath their knees as they scrambled forward into the suffocating gloom, leaving the harsh glare of the floodlights far behind.

Behind them, the sharp crack of a gunshot rang out through the crisp forest air, followed immediately by the sound of shattering glass and Miller's desperate shout:
