Chapter 13 - The Fire Below

The metal walls of the ventilation shaft grew uncomfortably warm to the touch, radiating a dry, baking heat that made every breath feel like inhaling fire. Below them, through the rusted seams of the ductwork, a dull orange glow pulsed like the heartbeat of some massive, mechanical beast awakening from a long sleep.
"Keep crawling!" Miller urged, her voice echoing sharply in the confined space. "We have about two minutes before the heat compromises this entire ventilation line."
Sharda pushed forward, her knees raw and bleeding through her white t-shirt, her fingers tightly clutching the small silver flash drive she had pulled from the server terminal. "Where does this pipe lead, Agent Miller? Are we going back to the park?"
"No," Miller panted, pausing for a fraction of a second at a junction box before taking a sharp left turn. "We're heading toward the old railway switching yard. The freight line your father built... it's still operational."
Julian crawled right behind Sharda, his grey t-shirt soaked in sweat, his grey eyes fixed on the small circle of grey daylight visible at the end of the tunnel. "The red train."
"The red train," Miller confirmed grimly. "It's the only way out of this county without triggering the foundation's highway checkpoints."
Suddenly, a loud, metallic grinding sound echoed from behind them, followed by the terrifying screech of tearing steel. Arthur's muffled voice roared through the ventilation ducts from somewhere below:
"You can't outrun the network, Miller! The entire county belongs to the Trust!"
"Faster!" Miller shouted, abandoning her cautious pace and scrambling forward on her hands and knees until she reached the end of the duct.
She kicked outward with both feet, smashing through a weak plastic exhaust grille and tumbling out into the cool, fresh air of an overgrown railway cutting. Sharda and Julian scrambled out right behind her, collapsing onto the damp gravel beside a pair of rusted, weed-choked steel tracks.
Before them, half-hidden beneath a camouflage tarp of green canvas and pine branches, sat a vintage diesel maintenance car painted a bright, faded crimson.
"There it is," Miller gasped, scrambling to her feet and pulling open the heavy sliding door of the railcar. "Get inside, both of you! Now!"
May you like
Julian climbed into the dusty cabin, helping Sharda up beside him just as a massive pillar of black smoke erupted from the ventilation shaft they had just escaped, billowing into the bright afternoon sky like an angry storm cloud.
