Chapter 8 - The Light in the Hallway

The sudden glare of fluorescent light cut through the dimness of the gymnasium like a blade, forcing Coach Miller to freeze mid-motion, his hand hovering inches from the fallen flash drive on the hardwood floor. Footsteps—fast, heavy, and numerous—echoed down the long corridor, accompanied by the distinct jingling of heavy keys and a familiar authoritative voice shouting instructions.

"Secure both exits! Nobody leaves this building until I have visual confirmation!" Principal Harrison’s voice boomed down the hallway, followed immediately by the solid, reassuring frame of Officer Miller stepping through the double doors with his flashlight beam sweeping across the polished floor.

Coach Miller slowly straightened up, his hand pulling away from the USB drive as if the plastic had suddenly turned red-hot. He smoothed down the front of his coaching polo, pasting on a thin, rehearsed smile as the principal and the resource officer advanced toward the center circle.

"Principal Harrison," Coach Miller called out, pitching his voice to sound professional and unconcerned. "Good thing you're back. I was just conducting a routine security sweep of the gymnasium perimeter when I found these two wandering around after hours unauthorized."

Maya scrambled to Leo’s side, ignoring the coach completely. She dropped to her knees on the hard floor, helping Leo retrieve his fallen crutch and pulling him up so he could lean his weight against her shoulder. Leo’s face was pale, sweat beading on his forehead from the sudden spike of pain in his knee, but his eyes remained locked on Coach Miller with unyielding focus.

"That's a lie," Maya said, her voice shaking with adrenaline but carrying absolute clarity. "He cornered us. He tried to take Leo’s property by force."

Officer Miller stepped between them, his flashlight beam illuminating Coach Miller’s tense posture and the small black flash drive resting innocently on the floor near the coach’s wingtip shoe. The officer didn't say a word; he simply knelt, picked up the USB drive with two fingers, and slipped it into an evidence pouch hanging from his utility belt.

Principal Harrison stopped three feet away, his expression grim. He looked at Maya, then at Leo’s scraped hands and pained posture, before finally turning his gaze to the assistant coach. "Coach Miller, your keycard access was flagged by the district server five minutes ago when you attempted to wipe the secondary backup drives in the AV server room."

Coach Miller’s composure finally cracked, a microscopic twitch betraying the panic beneath his skin. "That’s a systemic glitch. The servers have been dropping packets all week—"

"The servers were fine until you logged in using your personal administrative override code at 5:14 PM," Principal Harrison interrupted, pulling a printed access log from his jacket pocket. "Officer Miller, please escort Coach Miller to the precinct for questioning regarding institutional fraud and evidence tampering."

Officer Miller stepped forward, his hand resting firmly on his utility belt as he gestured toward the open exit doors. "Let's go, Coach. Quietly."

Coach Miller cast one venomous glare toward Leo before turning on his heel, marching out of the gymnasium flanked by the resource officer. The heavy metal doors clicked shut behind them, leaving Principal Harrison, Maya, and Leo alone in the vast, quiet space.

Principal Harrison sighed heavily, rubbing the bridge of his nose before looking down at Leo. "You have a dangerous habit of playing vigilante, son. But without what’s on that drive, the board never would have authorized the audit."

"I just wanted a fair shot at the scholarship I earned," Leo replied quietly, leaning on his crutches as he caught his breath.

"You got it," Principal Harrison said, turning toward the office. "And tomorrow morning, your name goes on the main display board in the lobby, permanently."
