Chapter 8 - The Price of Redemption

The deafening roar of the shotgun blast tore through the warehouse, shattering the rotting wooden rafters overhead and sending a shower of splinters and dust cascading down upon them like winter snow. Vance’s tackle hit Miller with the force of a freight train, knocking the older man off balance and sending the heavy weapon clattering across the concrete floor.
They tumbled together into a heap of rusted tools and discarded chains, grunting and striking out in a frenzy of raw survival instinct. Miller, despite his age, possessed the brutal strength of a man who had survived decades of street violence and institutional corruption. He jammed his forearm hard against Vance’s windpipe, cutting off the officer's air supply with ruthless efficiency.
"You stupid, ungrateful bastard," Miller choked out, pressing his knee into Vance's ribs with crushing weight. "I made your career!"
Vance clawed desperately at Miller’s arm, his vision beginning to blur at the edges as dark spots danced across his field of vision. The emerald disk in his pocket pulsed with a furious, blinding rhythm, casting an unearthly glow over their struggling bodies.
Suddenly, a heavy hand grabbed the back of Miller’s trench coat collar and hauled him backward with impossible strength, flinging the captain across the floor as if he weighed no more than a child.
Vance gasped for air, rolling onto his side and coughing violently as he clutched his bruised throat. He looked up to see Arthur standing over Miller, his breathing entirely calm, his weary eyes burning with an intense, righteous fire.
Miller scrambled backward across the concrete, wiping dust and blood from his lip, staring at Arthur with a mixture of terror and utter confusion. "What... what are you? You're not human. No old man is that strong."
"I told you, Captain, I am the record keeper," Arthur replied softly, his voice cutting through the ringing in Vance's ears. "And the book is finally closing."
Miller reached frantically toward his ankle holster, his fingers wrapping around the grip of a concealed backup Glock. "I don't care what you are," he snarled, pulling the pistol free and aiming it directly at Arthur’s chest. "I'm ending this right here."
Before Miller could acquire his target, the emerald disk in Vance’s pocket detached itself of its own accord. It floated up into the air, spinning silently like a miniature gyroscope, casting a brilliant emerald beam directly into Miller’s eyes.
The captain froze mid-motion, his finger locked on the trigger of the Glock. His eyes widened in absolute horror as the beam of light seemed to pierce straight through his skull, unlocking memories, secrets, and buried confessions he had hidden from the world for thirty years.
"No... get it out of my head!" Miller screamed, dropping his pistol as he clutched his temples, falling to his knees and rocking back and forth on the cold floor.

Vance pushed himself up to his feet, swaying slightly as he stared down at his former mentor in stunned disbelief. The warehouse door creaked open behind them, flooding the interior with the flashing red and blue lights of half a dozen arriving police cruisers.
