Chapter 1 - The Grip of Authority

The concrete pillar bit hard into the small of Arthur’s back as the weight of Officer Vance’s massive hands crushed the brown leather of his bomber jacket. Vance’s face was inches away, distorted by a lifetime of bitter suspicion and absolute authority within the concrete walls of the transit hub lobby. The fluorescent lights hummed with a sharp, sterile vibration that seemed to amplify the raw tension crackling in the air between them.

"You think I wouldn't notice a thief like you?" Vance snarled, his voice dropping into a harsh, gravelly register meant to humiliate and terrify anyone unfortunate enough to cross his path.

Arthur did not flinch, though his breath hitched slightly in his chest. His weary eyes, surrounded by a fine network of deep wrinkles, locked onto the younger man’s stern, unyielding gaze. He let out a slow, deliberate breath, refusing to shrink away from the intimidation.

"I am no thief, Officer," Arthur replied, his voice raspy but remarkably steady, cutting through the ambient noise of the bustling terminal around them. "You are looking at the wrong man, and you know it in your gut."

"Shut your mouth!" Vance barked, tightening his grip until the leather groaned under his fingertips. "I've watched your kind for two decades. You slip through the cracks, taking what isn't yours, thinking the system is too blind to catch you."

"The system isn't blind, Vance," Arthur whispered back, a faint, melancholic smile touching the corners of his thin gray beard. "It's just led by men who forgot what they were protecting in the first place."

Vance’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. He pulled his right hand back slightly, preparing to escalate the physical confrontation right there in the open lobby.

"One more word, old man, and you'll spend the night down in a holding cell where no one will ever hear you scream," Vance threatened, his chest heaving with suppressed rage.

Before Arthur could offer his quiet retort, a sudden, sharp hiss pierced the air between them. A blinding emerald flash erupted from the small lapel pin attached to Arthur's jacket, casting an unearthly, vivid green glow across both of their faces. Vance froze instantly, his mouth falling open as the color drained entirely from his stern cheeks, staring down at the glowing metal in absolute, paralyzed terror.
