Chapter 9 - The Gamble in the Haze

The grey vapor rolled across the concrete floor like a living thing, thick and heavy, swallowing the base of the desk and rising rapidly toward their chests. Marcus choked back a cough, the sweet almond scent burning his nasal passages and making his eyes water uncontrollably.

"Daddy..." Lily’s voice was barely a whisper now, her head resting limply against his shoulder, her light blue dress soaked with cold condensation from the damp air.

"Stay with me, baby. Look at me," Marcus choked out, blinking fiercely against the stinging fumes. He laid her gently down on the narrow cot, where the air was marginally less dense near the floorboards, then dropped to his hands and knees, crawling frantically toward the rusted metal grate in the far corner.

Clara was already slumped against the side of the desk, her green dress tangled around her legs, her breathing dangerously slow. Her fallen phone lay a few feet away, its shattered screen still casting a faint, rhythmic pulse of blue light against the dark floor—recording every agonizing second of their descent into unconsciousness.

Marcus reached the rusted grate, his long fingers clawing desperately at the painted screws holding it in place. Without a screwdriver, the metal bit into his skin, drawing hot blood that mixed with the cold dust of the floor.

"Come on... damn it, come on!" Marcus grunted, throwing his weight against the panel until the old screws sheared off with a sharp, metallic screech.

Behind the grate lay a secondary control box—a manual pneumatic valve with a large red handle covered in dust. Etched into the metal plate above the handle were the words: EMERGENCY OXYGEN PURGE.

Marcus didn't hesitate. He grabbed the heavy red lever with both hands and pulled with every ounce of strength left in his depleted muscles.

For three agonizing seconds, nothing happened. The heavy, sweet vapor continued to pour from the ceiling vents, and Marcus felt his own vision beginning to tunnel, dark spots dancing frantically across his field of vision. He slumped forward, his forehead pressing against the cold metal pipe of the valve.

Then, with a deafening shudder that shook the entire foundation of the house, a massive rush of compressed air hissed through the floorboards.

A torrent of crisp, clean, oxygen-rich air blasted upward from the vents, instantly dispersing the heavy grey fog and filling the subterranean room with a gale-force wind that blew the papers off the desk in a chaotic whirlwind.

Marcus gasped, filling his burning lungs with pure, cold air, coughing violently as his body fought to recover from the poison. He scrambled backward across the floor, crawling as fast as his trembling limbs could carry him until he reached the cot where Lily lay motionless.

"Lily! Lily, wake up!" Marcus cried, shaking her gently by the shoulders.

The little girl stirred, her eyelids fluttering open as she took a deep, shuddering breath of the clean air, coughing softly before looking up into her father’s terrified face.

"Daddy... is it over?" Lily whispered.

May you like

Before Marcus could answer, a loud, metallic clatter echoed from the top of the stairwell as the heavy deadbolt turned, and the reinforced door swung slowly open, revealing a towering silhouette standing in the doorway with a flashlight beam cutting through the gloom.
