Chapter 6 - The Voice from the Screen

The audio feed hissed with static before a clear, calm voice filled the subterranean room, echoing off the damp concrete walls.

"Hello, Marcus. I'm glad you finally found the key," the recorded voice said. It was smooth, devoid of anger, yet heavy with a chilling finality. "If you are hearing this, it means Helen tried to throw away the evidence, and Clara has already exposed the first layer of the lie."

Helen lunged at the laptop, her hands clawing desperately at the keyboard to shut the audio off, but Marcus caught her wrists in mid-air, pinning her arms behind her with cold, merciless strength.

"Stop touching things, Helen," Marcus commanded, his voice shaking with a rage that terrified even Clara. "Let the recording finish."

On the screen, a video file began to play automatically. The grainy footage showed the same basement room, but the lighting was different—brighter, captured during daylight hours. A woman with short brown hair, wearing a familiar green apron, sat at the desk looking directly into the camera lens. It was Sarah, Marcus’s missing wife, looking thinner than she had months ago, but entirely composed.

"If you're watching this, it's because I couldn't reach the authorities in time," Sarah’s recorded self said, her eyes staring out of the monitor with unsettling intensity. "Helen didn't just lock me out of the house, Marcus. She systematically transferred every asset of the family trust into her personal offshore accounts while you were traveling for work."

"That's a complete fabrication!" Helen screamed, kicking wildly against Marcus's restraint. "She embezzled the funds herself! She ran off with a lover, everyone in the neighborhood knows it!"

"Quiet!" Clara shouted, stepping closer to the screen, her phone recording the monitor in high definition. "Let her speak, Helen. Your panic is loud enough."

On screen, Sarah reached down and lifted a heavy stack of blue-bound bank statements, holding them up to the camera so the account numbers and Helen’s forged signature were clearly visible in high resolution.

"Helen forged my name on the power of attorney documents six months ago," Sarah continued, her voice unnervingly calm. "When I discovered it, she threatened to institutionalize me using our family doctor as a compliant witness. She bought this basement built under the guise of 'foundation repair' using our daughter's college fund."

Lily let out a soft gasp, her small fingers tightening into a fist against her father’s navy suit jacket. She looked up at Marcus, her eyes brimming with a quiet, devastating realization.

"Daddy," Lily whispered, her voice cutting through the noise of the video. "Is that why mom hasn't taken me to school in six months? Because Aunt Helen wouldn't let her leave?"

Marcus didn't answer. His face had turned the color of ash. He slowly released Helen’s wrists, staring down at his sister as if he were seeing a total stranger for the very first time.

Helen rubbed her bruised wrists, her chest heaving as she backed away from Marcus, her eyes darting frantically toward the dark stairwell leading back up to the house.

"You're fools, the lot of you," Helen spat, her voice dropping its frantic tone, replaced by a venomous sneer. "You think Sarah is some kind of saint? Check the bottom drawer of that desk, Marcus. Go ahead. See what your precious wife was planning while you were busy playing the dutiful corporate executive."

Marcus hesitated, then stepped toward the heavy wooden desk, his hand reaching out to pull open the bottom drawer.
