Chapter 4 - Echoes in the Dark

The front door slammed shut with a reverberating thud that rattled the stained-glass transom above it. Mark stood in the foyer for a long moment, his chest heaving, his fists clenched so tightly his fingernails dug deep into his palms. The encounter with Richard had confirmed his worst fears, yet it had raised a dozen new, terrifying questions. How did Richard get past the security system? Why target Ethan’s cake? And most importantly, what did Richard mean by loose ends?
Slowly, Mark exhaled a long, shaky breath and turned back toward the dining room.
Clara was waiting by the archway, her face etched with deep lines of worry. The children were sitting quietly at the edge of the living room sofa, still shaken by the evening's surreal sequence of events. Ethan looked up as his father approached, his large eyes filled with a mixture of guilt and fear that broke Mark’s heart.
“Was that… was that the man?” Ethan whispered, his voice trembling as he looked at the floor.
Mark stopped and knelt down in front of his son, softening his expression as much as he could. He placed a large, gentle hand on Ethan’s shoulder, the contrast between his tattooed arm and the boy’s clean white shirt stark under the warm lights.
“No, buddy. That wasn't him,” Mark said softly, forcing a reassuring smile that didn't quite reach his eyes. “That was just an old… business acquaintance. He got lost, that’s all. Everything is fine now.”
“He didn't look lost,” Lily chimed in from the sofa, her voice small and resolute. She clutched a yellow throw pillow to her chest like a shield. “He looked mean. Like the man in the kitchen.”
Clara shot a sharp, questioning look over the children’s heads toward her husband. Her eyes demanded an immediate, honest explanation. Mark stood up, meeting her gaze with a silent, heavy expression that spoke volumes. He gestured with a slight nod toward the kitchen, silently asking her to step away from the kids for a moment.
Clara hesitated, then gently patted Lily’s head. “Stay right here with your brother for a minute, sweeties. Daddy and I need to talk in the kitchen.”
As the parents walked away into the adjoining room, the heavy atmosphere in the house seemed to press down even harder. The ruined cake on the dining room floor still bled pink and white frosting across the marble, a grotesque centerpiece for an evening that had gone entirely off the rails.
In the kitchen, the soft hum of the refrigerator filled the quiet space. Mark leaned back against the granite countertop, rubbing his face with both hands.
“Mark, what is going on?” Clara asked, keeping her voice to a harsh whisper so the kids wouldn't hear. “That wasn't just a business acquaintance. That man was on our porch, and earlier, his cufflink was on our floor. What does Richard have to do with our children?”
Mark dropped his hands, his eyes dark and troubled. He pulled the brass cufflink and the pocketknife from his pocket, setting them down on the counter with a soft clink.
“Richard is playing a game, Clara,” Mark said, his voice laced with venom. “He thinks he can leverage my past against me. He thinks by creeping into the house and messing with Ethan, he can force my hand in the merger.”
“The merger?” Clara’s voice rose in disbelief, her eyes widening. “Mark, this isn’t about boardrooms and contracts anymore! He terrorized our children! He’s threatening our family!”
“I know what he’s doing,” Mark muttered, his jaw clenching. “And I’m going to end it. Tonight.”

Before Clara could demand to know his plan, a sudden, frantic cry echoed from the living room—a sound that froze the blood in their veins.
