Chapter 6

Arthur Sterling’s professional composure fractured within a fraction of a second. His oily smile slipped off his face, replaced by a sudden, pale flush of genuine panic as he instinctively took half a step backward, nearly tripping over his own custom leather shoes. He stared up at Marcus, whose six-foot-two frame blocked the entire doorway like a slab of reinforced concrete. "Who—who are you?" Sterling stammered, his high-pitched voice entirely lacking the confident authority he had practiced in his car mirror ten minutes prior. "What is this? I have an appointment with the property owner." Marcus didn’t answer right away. He simply folded his massive arms across his chest, letting the heavy silver chains on his vest jingle with a metallic menace that made Sterling swallow hard. From inside the hallway, Diesel stepped up directly behind Marcus, his shaved head and jagged jawline completing a visual tableau that looked like a scene straight out of a maximum-security prison yard.

"You must be the fella who likes bothering old ladies," Marcus said, his voice dropping into a low, rumbling register that sounded like grinding tectonic plates. "Step inside, Mr. Sterling. We’ve been expecting you." Before Sterling could protest, find his voice, or turn around to run back to his sedan, a massive hand belonging to Tank reached out from the gloom of the hallway and caught the lapel of Sterling’s expensive charcoal suit. With a single, effortless tug, Tank hauled the real estate developer across the threshold and deposited him squarely onto the hardwood floor of the entryway. The heavy front door swung shut with a resounding thud, latching securely behind him. Sterling stumbled, dropping his leather portfolio, which spilled a flurry of legal documents, eviction notices, and fraudulent mortgage deeds across the polished floorboards. He scrambled to his knees, his face red with a mixture of fear and outraged dignity, looking up like a cornered animal as four massive bikers closed in around him in a tight, unyielding semi-circle.

"This is trespassing! This is illegal detention!" Sterling shrieked, his voice cracking as he pointed a trembling finger at Diesel. "I’ll have the police here in two seconds! I’ll have you all arrested and put away for twenty years!" From the living room archway, Clara’s calm, steady voice cut through his panic like a surgical scalpel. "Go ahead and call them, Arthur," she said quietly, wheeling her walker forward just enough to come into his line of sight. "Tell the sheriff that the Vance family has finally come home for dinner." Sterling froze, his mouth hanging open as he stared at Clara, then back at Marcus, finally connecting the dots between the frail elderly woman and the terrifying motorcycle gang standing guard over her property. The realization hit him like a physical blow: he wasn't dealing with a lonely, helpless widow anymore; he was staring down the barrel of a very dangerous, very unexpected family reunion.
