Chapter 12 - The Switchboard Operator

The air in the kitchen grew instantly freezing, the temperature plummeting so fast that Clara’s breath plumed into thick white clouds of vapor. The thousands of tangled black wires slithering across the concrete floor surged forward like a tidal wave, wrapping swiftly around her ankles, her wrists, and her waist, binding her to the floor with incredible, crushing strength. She gasped, dropping the brass key as the cables yanked her arms backward against the wall.
"Julian! Help me!" she screamed, thrashing against the tight coils, but her husband didn't move an inch. He simply sat on his metal lockbox, watching her with a blank, hollow stare as if he were watching a movie he had seen a thousand times before.
The operator stepped closer, its switchboard panel glowing with a blinding, sickly green light that illuminated the entire pantry corridor. The swirling static around its face parted for a fraction of a second, revealing not a human visage, but a smooth, polished surface of black glass—identical to the screen of the smartphone Clara had picked up earlier that afternoon.
"Subscriber balance overdue," the metallic voice droned uniformly from the operator's chest plate. "Ten years of uninterrupted static requires full emotional liquidation. Do you wish to accept the charges?"
"No! No, I don't accept anything!" Clara shrieked, straining against the wires as they cut mercilessly into her skin, though strangely, no blood came—only a fine, powdery grey dust sifting from the fabric of her beige knit sweater.
In her lap, the toddler began to dissolve. The mustard yellow sweatshirt and blue jeans unraveled into thousands of loose threads, melting away into the swirling mass of black cables until nothing was left of him except the black smartphone, which clattered heavily onto the concrete floor between her feet. The screen flashed furiously, displaying a single flashing red button: ACCEPT.
The operator raised a gloved hand, pointing a long, skeletal finger directly at the glowing red button on the phone screen.
"The call cannot be completed as dialed," the operator hissed, its voice suddenly dropping into a familiar, intimate tone that made Clara’s blood run completely cold. It sounded like her own voice—the voice she used to sing lullabies in the nursery years ago. "Unless you step onto the switchboard."
May you like
Julian stood up slowly from his box, walking over to the phone on the floor. Without a word, he picked it up, pressed his thumb against the glowing red button, and handed the receiver out into empty air—directly toward Clara’s paralyzed face.
