Chapter 1 - The Echo of Authority

The sharp clatter of green beans hitting the stainless-steel colander echoed against the quartz countertops of the sunlit kitchen. Clara wiped her damp hands on her thighs, her beige knit sweater catching the sharp autumn glare piercing through the bay windows. On the warm wooden floor just feet away, twenty-month-old Leo sat cross-legged among plastic colored blocks, his small fingers clutching a discarded black smartphone like it was a scepter. When Clara had casually handed him the dead device to keep him occupied while she rushed to prep dinner, she had expected mindless toddler banging. She certainly hadn’t expected the sudden, chilling transformation that came over him.

Leo had pushed himself up with unexpected rigidity, pressed the blank screen firmly to his ear, and fixed her with a gaze so intensely adult it made the hair on her arms prickle.

"Baby, can you talk to dad? Mommy's busy," Clara had coaxed softly, leaning against the island with a tight, nervous smile, her heart doing a strange little flutter at the sheer absurdity of it.

Leo didn't blink. His tiny frame squared, posture stiffening into an uncanny imitation of corporate authority. He stared past her, his small brow furrowing in deep, practiced annoyance.

"Hey, buddy," Leo muttered in a low, gravelly rasp that sounded nothing like a baby's babble.

Clara froze, the knife slipping from her fingers to clatter harmlessly into the sink. "What did you just say?" she whispered, the air suddenly turning thick and suffocating around them.

Leo shifted his weight, planting a chubby hand firmly on his hip just beneath his mustard yellow sweatshirt. He looked down an imaginary hallway with absolute disdain.

"Where are you? I'm almost home," Leo demanded, his voice dripping with an exhausted, authoritative impatience that Clara had only ever heard echoing from behind closed study doors.

Clara’s breath hitched in her throat, her chest constricting violently as a cold sweat broke out across her neck. Her husband, Julian, was currently stuck in mid-afternoon traffic on the interstate, delayed by a routine client meeting downtown. Yet, standing before her in his diapers and blue jeans, their toddler wasn't mimicking a cartoon character or playing peek-a-boo. He was reproducing a verbatim confrontation, complete with inflection, rhythm, and a terrifyingly specific vocabulary.

"Leo, sweetheart, who are you talking to?" Clara asked, her voice cracking as she took a slow, trembling step toward him, her knees suddenly feeling entirely hollow.

Without looking at her, Leo gestured emphatically with his free hand, cutting the air with sharp, accusatory precision.

"Almost home? What does that mean? Just come home, and don't forget the groceries," Leo snapped, his small jaw clenching with chilling realism.

Before Clara could lunge forward to grab the phone from his tiny hand, the screen suddenly flickered to life in the toddler's grip, casting a harsh, unnatural blue glow across his serious face as an incoming call began to ring loudly.
