Chapter 14 - The Surface Relay

The blinding white light pouring down from the vertical shaft above felt almost aggressive after hours spent in the dark, damp subterranean tunnels. Clara gripped the heavy silver key tightly in her right hand, her knuckles white, her pleated navy skirt stained with soot and dust.

She scrambled up the metal rungs of the ladder two at a time, the roar of the vault struggle fading beneath her feet. The air grew instantly warmer, smelling of fresh asphalt, car exhaust, and bakery yeast—the exact scent of the morning she had first met Maeve in the alley.

Clara pushed her head and shoulders through a hidden floor panel set directly into the middle of the central city square.

She blinked rapidly against the harsh daylight. The square was completely deserted. The bustling trams had stopped, the cafes were empty with chairs stacked neatly on tables, and the towering digital billboards that usually looped corporate advertisements were now flashing a single, massive error code across the entire European district.

Standing a few paces away from the open panel, looking up at the giant central broadcast screen, was Maeve. The nine-year-old homeless girl stood barefoot on the clean cobblestones, her dirt-smudged face bathed in the glaring light of the error code.

"You made it," Maeve said softly, not turning around as Clara climbed out of the shaft and stumbled onto the pavement.

"Where is everyone?" Clara asked, panting as she looked around the empty, barricaded square. "The streets... they cleared the entire district."

"They're hiding behind the walls," Maeve replied, pointing a small finger toward the giant central screen overhead. "Waiting for the purge. But they're going to watch instead."

Clara looked down at the heavy silver key in her hand. She noticed a small, circular keyhole set into the base of the massive steel broadcast relay tower rising beside them. Without a second thought, she rushed forward, jammed the silver key into the lock, and turned it with all her strength.

A loud, pneumatic click echoed across the silent square.

The massive digital screens above flickered violently. The error code vanished, replaced instantly by the unedited, flickering footage from the subterranean vault—showing David and Elena fighting the armored operative amidst the glowing blue and red data cylinders.
