Chapter 13 - The Final Breach

The smoke cleared around the armored operative as he stepped out from the rubble of the collapsed ceiling fixture. The fractured visor of his helmet glowed with a chaotic web of red light, revealing only the faint outline of his eyes staring through the cracks with cold, unyielding malice.

"End of the line, Vance," the operative’s synthesized voice echoed off the circular stone walls of the vault. He raised his tactical rifle, locking the weapon’s barrel directly on David’s chest. "Hand over the drive. The purge sequence cannot be reversed."

David didn't flinch. He slipped the small metallic data drive safely into the pocket of his worn wool coat, keeping his hand firmly closed around it. He stepped slightly in front of Clara and Elena, positioning himself as a human shield.

"You're too late, commander," David said, his voice steady. "The broadcast upload has already been queued through the subterranean relay. The moment you pull that trigger, the encryption key automatically transmits to every receiver in the upper district."

The operative hesitated for a fraction of a second, his weapon tracking slightly as he processed the claim. "A bluff. The sub-level grid is completely severed from the surface network."

"Not all of it," Maeve whispered softly from the shadows.

Before the operative could react, Maeve darted across the open floor with incredible, unnatural speed, running directly toward a low service hatch behind the mahogany desk.

"Stop that girl!" the operative shouted, swinging his rifle toward Maeve.

Elena didn't hesitate. She lunged forward, tackling the operative around the waist just as he pulled the trigger. The weapon discharged into the stone ceiling, sending a blinding spray of molten concrete down onto the floor, but throwing his aim completely off.

The operative slammed Elena backward against the edge of the desk with brutal force, knocking the wind out of her. He raised the butt of the rifle to strike, but David intervened, tackling him hard into the rows of glass data cylinders.

The cylinders shattered with a deafening crash, releasing a blinding surge of blue light that filled the entire chamber, short-circuiting the operative’s armor and sending violent electrical sparks dancing across his chest plate.

Clara watched in absolute horror as her parents struggled against the armored guard on the floor, the red alarms blaring overhead in a dizzying rhythm.

"Clara! Catch!"

David threw a small, metallic object across the room through the flashing blue and red sparks.

Clara threw her hands out, catching the object instinctively against her chest. It wasn't the data drive—it was the heavy silver key her mother had worn around her neck all these years.

"Use the key on the central console!" David shouted over the electrical hum, holding the operative down with all his remaining strength. "Unlock the relay box! It’s the only way out for any of us!"

May you like

Clara spun around toward the main console as the service hatch Maeve had run toward sprang open, revealing a vertical ladder leading straight up into the blinding white light of the surface day.
