Chapter 11

The morning air inside Headmaster Sterling’s private office was thick with the scent of expensive cigars and cold panic. Sterling paced behind his walnut desk, his phone pressed tightly against his ear as yet another member of the St. Jude school board demanded an emergency resignation vote. The national broadcast had turned the prestigious academy into a public relations nightmare, with parent associations threatening massive tuition boycotts and media vans swarming the perimeter gates. Just as Sterling slammed the phone down onto its cradle, the office door swung open without a knock. It wasn't an angry parent or a board representative; it was Arthur Vance himself, unannounced and looking dangerously unraveled.

"Sterling, I need you to issue a formal press release on behalf of the academy," Arthur demanded, his voice tight and authoritative despite the clear panic in his eyes. "State that the video was deceptively edited by malicious actors, that the scholarship student violated disciplinary codes, and that the board stands firmly behind Julian’s enrollment and our institutional integrity." Sterling stopped pacing. He looked at the man who had funded the science wing, endowed the athletic complex, and dictated school policy for over a decade. For years, Sterling had bent the knee to Arthur Vance, compromising his educational ethics for the sake of donations. But looking at the smoking ruins of Vance Global on the morning news, Sterling realized that tying his sinking ship to Arthur’s anchor was professional suicide.

"I can't do that, Arthur," Sterling said, his voice surprisingly firm as he adjusted his glasses. "The school board met via emergency conference call thirty minutes ago. We have unanimously voted to suspend Julian Vance indefinitely pending a full internal investigation into targeted student harassment and code violations." Arthur stepped forward, grabbing the edge of the walnut desk with white-knuckled intensity. "You built this entire administration wing with my family’s grants, Sterling! Without Vance money, this academy becomes a glorified public prep school in six months!" Sterling didn't flinch. He walked over to the filing cabinet, pulled out a manila folder containing Julian’s disciplinary record and financial aid waivers, and slid it across the desk toward Arthur.

"Your money built the buildings, Arthur, but the students built our reputation," Sterling replied coldly. "And right now, keeping your son in this school is toxic to our survival. Clara Hayes filed a formal motion with the federal patent office this morning, backed by sworn affidavits and media documentation. Your legal firewall has collapsed. I suggest you focus on saving your company, because St. Jude Academy is officially cutting ties with the Vance family." Arthur stared at the folder, the blood draining entirely from his face. The realization that he had been abandoned by his own corporate sycophants hit him with the force of a physical blow. He turned away without another word, walking out of the office and leaving the headmaster alone in the silent, echoing room.
