Chapter 6: The Morning After the Fall

The pale morning sunlight struggled to penetrate the heavy velvet drapes of the master bedroom, casting long, dim shadows across the expansive king-sized bed. Megan lay awake, staring up at the intricate plaster molding of the ceiling, having barely slept a wink through the long, restless night. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the calm, unwavering gaze of Chef Elena and felt the suffocating weight of the silence that had fallen over Le Ciel restaurant. Beside her, David’s side of the bed was already empty, the sheets cold and undisturbed. Panic flared in her chest, and she quickly threw off the duvet, pulling on a silk robe before rushing out of the bedroom and heading down the sweeping staircase toward the ground floor.
The house was deathly quiet. She found David sitting at the marble kitchen island, a half-empty mug of black coffee sitting untouched in front of him as he stared fixedly at the screen of his laptop. He was already fully dressed in a crisp dark suit and a patterned silk tie, looking as though he had been awake for hours. He didn't look up when Megan walked into the room, his attention entirely consumed by whatever urgent emails were flashing across his display. Megan hesitated by the doorway, her throat tightening as she approached him slowly, reluctant to break the fragile atmosphere of the morning, yet desperate for any news about his job.
"David?" she asked tentatively, her voice lacking its usual commanding edge. "Did you... did you check your email? Has anyone from the firm reached out about the promotion?"
David slowly closed the laptop lid with a soft click, leaning back in his leather stool and rubbing his eyes with both hands. He looked exhausted, the dark circles under his eyes heavier than they had been the night before. He looked at Megan for a long, agonizing moment, his expression unreadable, before he let out a slow, heavy sigh that seemed to carry the weight of the entire world.
"The promotion hasn't been rescinded," David said quietly, watching carefully as a flicker of relief crossed Megan’s face. "Not yet, anyway. But managing partner Miller called me into his office first thing this morning before the regular staff even arrived."
Megan stepped closer, gripping the edge of the marble island. "What did he say? Did Elena call him?"
"No, Elena didn't call him," David replied bitterly. "She doesn't need to make petty phone calls to destroy people. That's the terrifying part about people like her. Miller called me in because Elena sent a formal email to the building management committee regarding our lease renewal, and as a secondary note, she happened to mention that one of the senior partners at Vance and Sterling had an immediate family member who lacked the basic emotional maturity to conduct themselves politely in public spaces. Miller didn't mention the restaurant specifically, but he made it very clear that our firm's reputation relies heavily on the impeccable personal conduct of its leadership team and their spouses."

Megan swallowed hard, the dry lump in her throat making it difficult to breathe. "So... you're in trouble?"
"I am on probation, Megan," David said, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "My promotion is officially on hold for six months while the executive committee evaluates whether my domestic life poses a liability to the firm. Six months of walking on eggshells, all because you couldn't resist the urge to treat a hardworking chef like a servant."
