Chapter 1: The Splashed White Coat

The amber chandeliers of Le Ciel cast a warm, deceptive glow across the crowded dining room, illuminating the quiet tension that always accompanied high-society dining in downtown Chicago. At Table Four, Megan sat wrapped in her expensive beige designer dress, her diamond hoop earrings catching the light every time she tossed her head in arrogant dismissal. Across from her, David stared into his glass of scotch, his tailored dark suit feeling suddenly too tight around his collar as he tracked the disaster unfolding in slow motion. Standing directly beside them was Elena, her white chef’s coat pristine save for the dark, spreading crimson stain of spilled cabernet soaking through the fabric near the black-rimmed buttons. Only moments ago, Megan had snapped her fingers, mistaking the executive chef for a low-level server, barking insults about wanting someone with class because David had just secured a promotion to senior partner. Instead of calling for a manager, Elena had walked out of the open kitchen herself to personally deliver the vintage requested, only to have Megan deliberately jerk her arm, sending the heavy goblet crashing against her chest.

Elena did not flinch, nor did she raise her voice to match the haughty sneer still plastered across Megan’s face. Her hair remained slicked back into a neat, unshakeable bun, and her dark eyes held a calm, terrifying stillness that cut straight through the ambient noise of the restaurant. David bolted upright from his leather chair, his face instantly draining of color as the horrifying reality of what his wife had just done crashed down upon him. He recognized that white coat immediately. Everyone in the Chicago culinary scene knew the iconic insignia embroidered on the left sleeve, though Megan, blinded by her sudden obsession with newfound status, had failed to notice the subtle gold threading. David grabbed the edge of the mahogany table, his knuckles turning stark white as panic seized his throat. The entire dining room seemed to hold its collective breath, watching the silent standoff between the arrogant socialite and the woman whose name was synonymous with culinary excellence across the entire Midwest.

"Are you crazy, Megan?" David finally managed to choke out, his voice trembling as he stared in absolute disbelief at the staining wine.

Megan scoffed, waving a dismissive hand through the air as if swatting away an annoying fly. She glanced around the room, expecting the surrounding diners to share in her elitist amusement. "Relax, David. It is just a clumsy employee who needs to learn her place. Honestly, the service here has gone completely downhill since they started hiring off the street. Tell her to clean it up and bring us another bottle, preferably one that doesn’t end up on my dress if I happen to brush against her."

Elena slowly reached up, her fingers gently grazing the soaked fabric of her coat. She did not blink. She let the heavy silence stretch for a few agonizing seconds before she tilted her head slightly, studying Megan with the detached curiosity of a scientist examining a particularly dull specimen. When Elena finally parted her lips to speak, her tone was quiet, measured, and devoid of any warmth whatsoever.

"You asked for someone with class," Elena said, her voice carrying effortlessly across the suddenly dead-silent dining room. "I own this restaurant."

Megan’s mocking smirk froze instantly, her eyes widening in absolute terror and shock as her jaw dropped open in slow motion. The color drained entirely from her face, leaving her looking remarkably pale against the expensive beige of her dress.

"Boss?" Megan whispered, the word escaping her throat as a broken, terrified gasp.
