Chapter 5 - The Empty Penthouse

The heavy oak door of the downtown penthouse slammed shut behind Julian as he stormed into the sprawling living room, tossing his suit jacket onto a designer armchair with violent frustration. Clara followed closely behind, her breathing ragged, her face flushed with anger and fear. The press conference had been an unmitigated disaster, resulting in an immediate suspension of his executive duties pending a federal investigation into his financial transactions. The golden empire he had spent years trying to conquer through manipulation and deceit had vanished into thin air within the span of twenty minutes.

"How could you be so stupid, Julian?" Clara shouted, her voice echoing off the high, vaulted ceilings of the luxury apartment. "You told me you owned this company! You swore to me that Elena was completely powerless, that we were secure!"

Julian spun around, his eyes dark with fury, his facade of calm authority entirely gone. "Shut up, Clara! I didn't know her family had the trust locked down with dual-authentication clauses. It was a legal trap designed to look like a standard severance!"

"A trap you walked right into because you couldn't control your ego!" Clara fired back, her hands pressing protectively against her swollen abdomen. "And now what? Our accounts are frozen, your cards are declined, and the federal investigators are auditing every single cent we’ve spent over the past year. Where are we supposed to live? How are we going to pay for the hospital bills?"

Julian walked over to the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, staring out at the rain that had finally begun to fall, streaking the pristine glass with gray water lines. He didn't answer. He couldn't. Every single asset he thought he had acquired was legally tied up in litigation, frozen by the very trust he had dismissed as a relic of the past. Even the luxury penthouse they currently stood in belonged to a corporate holding subsidiary controlled by Marcus.

Suddenly, the sharp chime of the smart-home intercom echoed through the silent apartment. Julian turned his head sharply toward the wall panel, where a digital notification flashed in bright red letters: Visitor at service entrance.

"Who could that be?" Clara muttered, stepping back toward the hallway. "Did the press follow us here?"

Julian walked slowly over to the control panel and pressed the audio link, his thumb hovering over the screen. "State your business," he demanded, his voice tight with lingering adrenaline.

There was a brief, heavy pause before a crisp, familiar voice emerged from the speaker system.

"Mr. Vance, this is process service," the voice stated clearly. "You have thirty minutes to vacate the premises. The residential lease has been formally terminated due to breach of corporate occupancy terms."

Julian stared at the screen in absolute disbelief as the digital lock on the main entry door clicked audibly, signaling that the override code had just been accepted from the central property management office.
