Chapter 3 - The Morning Announcement

The flashing camera strobes outside the corporate auditorium cast harsh, erratic shadows across the oak-paneled walls. Julian stood at the center mahogany podium, adjusting his silk tie with practiced confidence. To his right stood Clara, draped in a tasteful ivory designer coat that attempted to conceal her advancing pregnancy, though the cameras relentlessly zoomed in on her midsection anyway. Julian cleared his throat, leaning slightly into the array of microphones that captured his breathing with crisp, amplified authority. He looked every bit the corporate conqueror—impeccably groomed, fiercely ambitious, and entirely intoxicated by his own reflection in the lenses of the financial press.
"Today marks a profound turning point for Vanguard Holdings," Julian announced, his voice smooth and resonant, echoing off the high ceilings of the packed press room. "As we restructure our executive leadership to meet the rigorous demands of tomorrow's market, we are also welcoming new foundational energy into the family. Efficiency, vision, and uncompromising commitment to growth will guide our path forward."
In the back row of the auditorium, leaning quietly against the marble pillar, Marcus crossed his arms and watched the performance with a look of mild amusement. He didn't need to be loud; truth had a way of cutting through noise much faster than rhetoric. Beside him, an inconspicuous young man in a gray suit held a heavy leather briefcase resting on his knees.
A reporter from the financial daily raised his hand sharply. "Mr. Vance, market rumors suggest that your recent consolidation of voting shares coincided with a sudden liquidity shift from the primary development fund. How do you respond to claims that the board was bypassed during this acquisition?"
Julian’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second, a micro-expression of panic that vanished almost as quickly as it appeared. He recovered smoothly, waving a dismissive hand toward the crowd. "Those rumors are entirely unfounded. Vanguard Holdings operates with absolute transparency and unyielding financial health. Any minor procedural adjustments are simply part of our streamlined modernization strategy."
Clara offered a tight, rehearsed smile for the cameras, though her hand trembled slightly as she gripped the edge of the podium for support. She could sense the subtle shift in the room's atmosphere, a sudden, collective rustle of papers as journalists began receiving real-time push notifications on their phones.
Julian continued his speech, speaking passionately about future expansions and market dominance, entirely unaware that the digital devices in the hands of every single reporter in the room were vibrating furiously with urgent regulatory alerts.
At the center desk of the financial daily's newsroom miles away, an editor slammed a red-flagged document down onto the desk, immediately transmitting a court-ordered asset freeze order straight to the mobile feeds of the financial press pool.
Julian reached the climax of his prepared remarks, raising his voice to capture the final applause. "The future of Vanguard belongs to those who build it, and we are just getting started."

He paused, waiting for the thunderous applause he felt he deserved. Instead, the room was met with an eerie, collective silence, followed immediately by a cacophony of simultaneous camera shutters flashing wildly not at his face, but at their glowing screens.
