Chapter 1

The hardwood floor beneath Arthur’s boots seemed to tilt, the echoes of his own shout still vibrating against the newly painted nursery walls. Elena was pressed hard against the mattress pillows inside the white wooden crib, her knuckles white as she gripped the slatted railing, her breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps through her parted lips. The pink silk of her robe was twisted around her legs, marking the violent struggle that had just unfolded before his eyes. Margaret, his mother, sat sprawled on the beige carpet just feet away, her dark hair coming loose from its tight bun, her green dress bunched awkwardly around her knees. Her hand was raised defensively near her face, blue veins standing out against pale skin, her eyes wide with a mixture of shock and suppressed malice that Arthur had never seen directed at anyone, let least of all his wife.
Arthur’s heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird, his chest heaving inside his dark maroon sweater. The silence in the room became absolute, heavy with unsaid accusations and the sharp metallic scent of fear. He towered over his mother, his fists clenched so tight his fingernails bit into his palms, the veins in his neck bulging as he fought to control the primal urge to strike back. Elena let out a whimpering breath, her gaze darting between her mother-in-law on the floor and her husband standing guard at the threshold. The baby mobile above the crib spun ever so slightly on its invisible string, casting slow, dancing shadows across the white woodwork.
Margaret slowly lowered her hand, her expression hardening from shock back into that cold, impenetrable mask she had worn since Arthur was a boy. She adjusted the collar of her green dress with trembling fingers, refusing to look directly at her son’s furious face. “You don’t understand what was happening, Arthur,” Margaret whispered, her voice dangerously calm, devoid of any genuine remorse. “I was only trying to protect what belongs to this family. That child inside her… it isn't what you think it is.”

Arthur took a sharp step forward, his jaw locked so hard his teeth ached. He didn't want to hear her excuses, her psychological manipulations, or her archaic notions of bloodlines and duty. He knelt down beside his wife, gently covering Elena’s trembling hand with his own rough palm, feeling the ice-cold sweat on her skin. Elena blinked back tears, her chest rising and falling rapidly as she leaned into his touch, finding a small island of safety in the wreckage of the afternoon.
“Get out,” Arthur said, his voice dropping to a low, menacing growl that brooked no argument. He kept his eyes locked on his mother, who was now pushing herself up from the floor with slow, deliberate dignity. “Leave this house right now, Margaret. And if you ever come near Elena or my unborn child again, I swear to God I will cut you out of my life permanently.” Margaret straightened her skirt, gave Elena one last chilling look of pure disdain, and walked out without another word.
