Chapter 10 - The Voice in the Radio

Ava lay frozen on the vibrating floorboards, her hand hovering inches from the dead operative's tactical vest. The radio hissed again, the static clearing into the sterile, clinical voice that had examined her leg just hours before in the emergency room.
"Strike Team Alpha, confirm package retrieval," Dr. Harrison repeated, her cadence brisk and completely detached from the gentle doctor who had whispered warnings behind hospital curtains. "The localized EMP has disabled the rail switcher downstream. You have four minutes before the locomotive loses momentum. Secure the cipher and neutralize the rogue handler."
Ava's breath caught in her throat. The entire emergency room visit had not been an escape—it had been a setup. Dr. Harrison wasn't trying to save her; she was verifying the target before deploying her retrieval team.
Clenching her jaw against the blinding pain in her leg, Ava pulled herself over the operative's body. She unclipped the tactical radio from his vest and pressed the transmission bar.
She didn't speak. She only breathed—shallow, trembling, and terrified.
A brief pause stretched across the line.
"Ava?" Dr. Harrison’s voice softened instantly, adopting the sickeningly warm bedside manner she had used in the triage room. "Ava, sweetie, are you there? Don't be afraid. The man in the black vest was sent to extract you safely from Richard. Where is he?"
Ava forced her voice through her parched lips. "He fell off the bridge."
Silence hung over the channel for three agonizing seconds.
"Good," Dr. Harrison said, the maternal warmth vanishing in an instant, replaced by cold steel. "Then you are alone in that container. Ava, listen to me very carefully. The train is about to stop inside the Mount Sentinel railway tunnel. Do not attempt to leave the car. If you crawl into that tunnel, you will freeze, or your fractured tibia will sever the femoral artery. You will bleed out in twelve minutes."
"Who are you?" Ava cried out, tears cutting through the grime on her cheeks. "Why does everyone keep lying to me?!"
"I was your father's chief geneticist, Ava," Dr. Harrison replied calmly. "Marcus Vance didn't leave you an inheritance of money or land. He left you the master architecture to the nation's automated defense network. That sequence is coded into the synthetic marrow of your left leg. You are the only living key to the country's military vault."
Beneath Ava, the train's brakes suddenly engaged with a deafening, metallic shriek. Sparks illuminated the open doorway in flashing bursts of orange and white. The heavy cargo car bucked violently, throwing Ava against the crates as the locomotive ground to a shuddering halt inside the pitch-black maw of the mountain tunnel.

"Stay where you are," Dr. Harrison whispered through the radio. "We are already inside the tunnel with you."
Through the darkness of the cavernous tunnel ahead, three bright tactical floodlights snapped on, beaming directly into the open cargo car.
