Chapter 1 - Fractures in the Dark

The harsh fluorescent lights of the corridor buzzed with a dull, sickening drone. Richard Mitchell did not blink. His posture remained straight, his hands tucked halfway into the pockets of his khaki slacks, presenting the image of an anxious, weary guardian. But his jaw shifted—a tight, rhythmic tick that only Ava recognized. Ava sat frozen on the yellow emergency gurney, her fingers knotting into the hem of her plastic raincoat. Every breath felt like inhaling ground glass.

"Mr. Mitchell," Officer Ramos repeated, stepping into the treatment bay. Her voice was level, trained to defuse, yet her hand rested naturally near her duty belt. "We need you to step down the hall with us. Just a standard verification regarding the intake incident."

Ava’s mother, Karen, jumped to her feet. The beige knit of her cardigan shook as her knuckles whitened against the metal guardrail of the bed. "Is there a problem, officer? My daughter took a tumble down our basement steps. She tripped over laundry. It’s an accident. Richard was upstairs the entire time."

Richard offered a small, tragic smile. "Karen, honey, calm down. It’s fine. The police are just doing their due diligence. You know how these protocols work." He turned his eyes slowly toward Ava, his gaze heavy, dark, and unmistakable in its silent warning. "Isn't that right, Ava? Tell the officer how clumsy you've been lately."

Ava’s lips parted, but dry air hitched in her throat. Her eyes darted from Richard’s unblinking stare to the radiologist standing behind the officer. Dr. Harrison held a digital tablet against her chest, her expression grim, shielding the teen from view.

"She’s in shock and needs a full orthopedic cast immediately," Dr. Harrison said firmly, stepping between Ava and Richard. "She cannot be interviewed under distress. Mr. Mitchell, the waiting area is through those doors."

Richard took half a step backward, raising his palms in an easy, innocent gesture of surrender. "Of course, Doctor. Take care of my girl." He backed out into the hallway, followed closely by Officer Ramos and a second officer.

The sliding partition doors whirred shut, cutting off his silhouette.

Inside the quiet room, Karen sank into a vinyl chair, burying her face in her trembling hands. "Ava... why did you let them look so closely? Why didn't you just let them wrap the sprain?"

Ava pulled her knees toward her chest, wincing as a sharp, fiery pain lanced along her shin. "Mom... the doctor saw the old ones."

Karen froze, looking up with reddened eyes. Before she could answer, Dr. Harrison walked back in, pulling the privacy curtains completely shut.

"Ava," the doctor said in a low, gentle voice, locking the wheel brakes on the gurney. "The police aren't just taking a statement. There’s a detective on the way. But before she gets here, you need to hear this: the X-ray didn't just show fractured bone. It revealed something else embedded in the tissue."
