Chapter 1: The Feast of Glass

The dining room of the Vance estate in Greenwich, Connecticut, was illuminated by the warm, flickering glow of beeswax candles arranged along a six-foot garland of fresh Fraser fir, eucalyptus, and winterberries. In the corner, a nine-foot Douglas fir stood draped in hand-blown glass ornaments and soft golden fairy lights, casting a shimmering aura across the mahogany dining table.

The remnants of Christmas Eve dinner lay scattered across bone-china plates—roasted tenderloin, glazed winter vegetables, and half-empty crystal goblets of vintage Pinot Noir.

Beside the centerpiece, resting open like an exposed nerve, was a heavy yellow legal folio stamped in bold black ink: **PRENUPTIAL AGREEMENT & INFIDELITY CLAUSE — SECTION 14.**

Elena sat in a high-backed upholstered dining chair, eight months pregnant, wearing a long-sleeve blush-pink knit maxi dress. Her fingers clutched the arms of the chair as she leaned across the table, her face flushed with frantic, defensive malice as she pointed an accusing finger at the woman standing at the head of the table.

""I’m carrying Ryan’s baby because you couldn't!"" Elena shouted, her voice shrill and trembling with desperate triumph.

Standing tall and motionless at the head of the table was Claire Vance. Claire was thirty-three, her long dark hair falling in elegant waves over the shoulders of a tailored emerald-green silk wrap dress. She held a smartphone pressed to her ear, her hazel eyes holding the deep, unshakeable calm of a winter sea. Her posture did not yield an inch; she looked upon the room not with wounded rage, but with the chilling, absolute clarity of someone who had anticipated every move on the board.

Ryan lunged forward from his seat, his white dress shirt unbuttoned at the collar, sleeves rolled up, his face twisted in sheer, unvarnished terror. He reached across the table, grabbing Claire’s wrist in a frantic attempt to pull the phone from her ear.

""Claire, stop!"" Ryan pleaded, his voice cracking into a desperate stammer. ""You’ll take everything! We can handle this privately after the holidays!""

Standing in the shadow of the doorway, Ryan’s mother, Eleanor, clutched her pearl necklace with trembling hands, her mouth hanging open in frozen disbelief.

Claire did not pull her arm away with frantic violence; she simply looked at Ryan’s fingers on her sleeve until he instinctively let go, cowed by the quiet, lethal majesty of her gaze.

Claire spoke into the receiver, her voice dropping into a register of smooth, executive finality.

""Martin... activate Section 14.""

She lowered the phone, tapped the screen once to end the call, and leaned forward over the festive table, looking directly into Elena’s panicked eyes.

""Everything, Elena,"" Claire said softly, gesturing toward the silver platters, the antique chandelier, and the velvet upholstery beneath the pregnant woman. ""Including the chair you're sitting in.""
