Chapter 2

The chaotic momentum carried Leo across the living room like a missile. Before Maya could process the sudden invasion of her personal space, Leo collided with her shoulder, sending both of them tumbling sideways across the slick, water-logged wooden floor. The ceramic mug shattered into a dozen pieces as they clipped it, sending sharp white shards scattering across the room. Maya shrieked in genuine surprise as her aggressive stance crumpled under the sheer physical weight and velocity of her returning brother.

Clara lay shivering against the baseboard, pulling her soaked cream-colored cardigan tightly around her frail shoulders, wheezing softly as she tried to crawl away from the thrashing limbs. Eleanor remained entirely motionless on the couch, her gaze shifting mechanically toward the corner of the room where a framed photograph hung crookedly on the wall.

Leo pinned Maya’s arms to her sides, his breathing ragged and hot against her ear. “What the hell is wrong with you?” he barked, his voice trembling with a mixture of rage and profound disbelief. “Have you completely lost your mind?”

Maya struggled beneath him, her athletic muscles straining as she tried to buck him off. She managed to wrench one arm free and shoved hard against his chest, her dark eyes flashing with a defiant, venomous fire that matched his own.

“Get off me, you hypocrite!” Maya screamed back, her voice cracking with hysteria. “You weren’t here! You didn’t have to deal with this daily nightmare! You flew away to play hero while I was left rotting in this house, wiping up after ghosts and invalids!”

The words hit Leo like a physical blow. The sudden rush of adrenaline began to recede, leaving behind a cold, hollow ache in his stomach. He slowly loosened his grip, allowing Maya to scramble backward until her spine hit the opposite wall. She pulled her knees up to her chest, her blue tank top damp from the puddle she had created, her chest heaving as she glared at him with undisguised hatred.

Leo pushed himself up from the floor, his combat boots slipping slightly on the soapy water. He looked down at his trembling hands, then across the room to where Clara was slowly being helped into a sitting position by her own trembling arms. The old woman wouldn't meet his eyes. Her gray hair clung wetly to her forehead, and a dark bruise was already beginning to form on her thin elbow where she had struck the floor.

The silence that settled over the living room was heavier than the violence that had preceded it. It was a suffocating quiet, broken only by the erratic ticking of the grandfather clock in the hallway and the shallow, rattling breaths of their mother from the couch. Leo realized instantly that this wasn't just a sudden outburst of sibling rivalry. This was the ugly, festering symptom of a much deeper, systemic decay that had hollowed out their family while he was thousands of miles away, fighting wars on foreign soil while his own home tore itself apart from the inside.
