Chapter 8 - The Splintered Doorframe and the USB Drive

The heavy thud against the apartment’s front door wasn't a knock this time. It was a brutal, mechanical impact that splintered the oak frame right where the deadbolt had been secured moments earlier.

Detective Miller's voice crackled loudly through the phone handset still clutched in Chloe's hand. "Miss Davis? What was that noise? Are you still there? Report your location immediately!"

Chloe didn't answer the detective. She dropped the landline handset, letting it dangle by its curly cord as it clattered against the baseboard. Her eyes locked onto the entryway where the reinforced wooden door cracked down the middle, the metal strike plate tearing free from the wall with a shower of drywall dust and screws.

Martha screamed, stumbling backward into the kitchen island, while Page curled into a fetal position beside the sofa, whimpering uncontrollably. Arthur stirred weakly on the cushions, his eyes fluttering open as he tried to lift his head toward the source of the commotion.

With a final, violent kick, the front door swung inward, splintering completely off its top hinge.

It wasn't Vance this time. Two men in tactical black gear, wearing heavy ceramic vests and balaclavas, stepped into the foyer. They weren't debt collectors or mob enforcers; they moved with the rigid, synchronized discipline of federal agents, their Heckler & Koch carbines held at a low ready, sweeping the room with tactical precision.

"FBI! Nobody move! Hands where we can see them!" the lead agent barked, his voice echoing off the apartment's high ceilings.

Behind them, a tall woman in a sharp gray pantsuit stepped into the ruined doorway, holding a leather badge wallet open in her hand. Her dark hair was pulled back into a severe bun, and her expression was carved from absolute granite.

"Agent Sarah Sterling, Federal Bureau of Investigation," she announced, her eyes sweeping over Martha, Page, and finally resting on Chloe standing near the kitchen. "Which one of you is Chloe Davis?"

Chloe raised her hands slowly, stepping away from the counter. "I am. I was just on the phone with Detective Miller."

Agent Sterling lowered her badge, slipping it into her jacket pocket as she walked past the tactical agents into the center of the living room. "Miller kicked your file up to our task force ten minutes ago. We’ve been tracking Gary Sullivan's shell companies for eighteen months. Your uncle has been operating a massive Ponzi scheme under the cover of real estate restructuring, using victims like your sister as pawns to launder funds for the very syndicate Mr. Vance represents."

Martha’s knees finally gave out entirely. She sank slowly to the floor, her hands gripping her pink sweater as dry, racking sobs tore through her chest. "Gary... my own brother..." she whispered, the reality of the betrayal finally crushing her spirit entirely.

Page stared up at Agent Sterling with hollow, shell-shocked eyes, the magnitude of her stupidity finally dawning on her in all its terrifying clarity.

Agent Sterling stopped a few feet away from Chloe, her eyes sharp and assessing. "We know about the warehouse transfer, Miss Davis. And we know about your bank account. Your uncle wiped your savings to cover an emergency wire transfer to an offshore Cayman account thirty minutes ago. But we can freeze those assets—*if* you have what Detective Miller said you have."

Chloe didn't hesitate. She reached into her jacket pocket, her fingers brushing against her father's letter, and pulled out a small, silver micro-USB drive that she had quietly retrieved from her laptop bag before the door was broken down. It was a complete mirror image of her uncle’s private server ledger, which she had downloaded weeks ago when she first suspected Gary was tampering with the family trust.

"Here," Chloe said, holding out the small drive. "Every single routing number, shell corporation, and wire confirmation Gary used to funnel money from my parents' mortgage and my savings into Vance’s syndicate."

Agent Sterling stepped forward, her eyes gleaming with satisfaction as she reached out and took the USB drive from Chloe’s palm. She slid it into a secure, Faraday-shielded evidence pouch clipped to her belt.

"This is the missing puzzle piece we’ve needed for six months," Agent Sterling said firmly. She turned to the tactical agents near the door. "Secure the premises. I want a digital forensic sweep of every device in this apartment."

Just as the agents moved to comply, a sharp beep echoed from the hallway outside, followed by the sound of the service elevator doors opening once again.

Agent Sterling’s hand instinctively dropped toward the holster at her hip. She gestured for the tactical team to take positions on either side of the splintered doorway.

Step by measured step, the sound of polished leather shoes echoed down the hall. A tall, elegant figure stepped into the ruined frame—not an FBI agent, and not Vance. It was an impeccably dressed older woman with sharp silver hair, wearing a tailored navy coat and holding a leather briefcase. She looked around the chaotic, destroyed living room with absolute calm, her eyes finally locking onto Chloe with a chilling, knowing smile.

"I see you found the drive, Agent Sterling," the silver-haired woman said smoothly, her voice cutting through the tension like glass. "Too bad it's missing the encryption key."
